where to find steel knitting needles ?

these haven't bent yet, and up until this point I haven't really oiled them or anything and there isn't any rust. I keep a point on them with my lansky crock stick with the groove in it

it would be cool to rhinoline the end for a handle...i might try that on one.

Hi All

Why not just use 1/4" rod iron? Granted it is soft and can bend but ity is cheap and does work well.

Is it smaller than mason line ? As for sharpening with a crock stick ? I have the spyderco ceramic stick with a groove in it . What is the method for sharpening a point using the grooved stone ? Ya learn something new every day .

I push on the groove, while rotating it, trying to keep the point balanced on all sides, seems to keep it sharp enough for me.

:bang on the forehead with hand:

I was so focused on 'knitting needles'
that I walked right past an obvious resource

long screwdrivers

bought a 'tough' one today
-without- handle it's ~18" long ~1/4" diameter round rod
<$9
You want ~ the same for $1
go to the $1 store and get one not nearly as tough
but cheap for experimenting

some have square or other cross-sections
various diameters

it will take me about 5 minutes
to cut a length & do a rough point on it

trying to decide on the length . . . . . . . .

Long screwdriver shaft very nice
my test is on ~1/4" dia rod
need throwing time  to work on best length

otoh

noticed a 1/4" wood/spade bit
~6" long, shaft <~1/4"
sortof like

nice point sticks nice in wood,
unmodified...short penetration on wood

this 6" feels a little short
maybe 8" oal better

if you grinded the two lower points down to the base of the other, you might have a pretty traditional straight shuriken almost. With a little work on the grinder that might be cool.

Why go to all this trouble when you can goto ANY hardware ( Home Depot, Ace, True Value ) I'll even ship you some if you cover the cost, and get 10", 12", or 16" Galvanized steel nails. I use my bench grinder to sharpen them and I hacksaw the heads off. I made 10 for about $2 and they stick perfect from 6-15-20 feet and they are very low maintance!!! Way better than an expensive drill bit or screwdriver!!

All fine ideas

here's another I just came across:

'Line Pins'
used by bricklayers to hold a cord straight between two points
about 6"-7" (160mm) length
most in the style below are drop-forged steel
some cheaper ones of other shapes are cast metal

mostly sold at UK websites

USA websites sell end-blocks or concrete-nails for the same purpose

Here's a 'nail' I'd like to try:

I have a few etching(sp) needles that are about the size of commandojoe's needle. got them at hobby lobby for a couple buck each. they are pointed and are fairly hard steel.

Had to look that up......

What's an etching needle ?

"The Twisted Etching Needle is a crossover hit too, in world of modeling, moldmaking, and sgrafitto.
Solid steel,
7" (178 mm) long. "

Can't waste this duplicate post space :)

So I'll add something new

I have about a dozen of the #04 below
that I got from a discount tool store at <$1 each
(couple of years ago, saved in a drawer somewhere)
they're fairly springy, but I never tried them on wood

Good penetration through cardboard boxes
~6" length
