you should have one......if there is none then the PO did not follow procedure, and he could get in trouble for that.....
 
I am not sure you want to stur things up with the NYPD but there should be a green form listing the property taken as evidence from you. You should have been given a copy, or at worst it should have been in the docket envelope with the ADA.....

It's sad, but that's probably what I'd do too. The cost of the knife is less than hiring a lawer to get it back. And you don't want to give the LEOs any reason to remember you.

at least in ca, its not that difficult. once an item is no longer needed for evidence, all one has to do is request its return.
