Hi, so I’m heat treating my first few 1075 knives. I’ve watched lots of videos on Yotube and I think I’m ready to do it but just checking I’ve got everything right on here. A picture of my charcoal forge https://ibb.co/vQ9L5d8 it’s hooked up to a metal pipe going into a foot pump that is used to blow up air beds.

This is the order Im going to do the heat treating in:
Start fire put charcoal into forge and let it heat up. Place knife into charcoal And let knife get red/orange hot. Take knife out and let normalise on brick. Heat up metal rod and quench in vegetable oil to heat up oil. Put knife back in and let it heat up until it doesn’t stick to a magnet. When at the right temperature quench in oil. Use a file to make sure it’s been heat treated properly. Scrub knife with soap and water. Put knife in oven at 200c/400f for 1 hour take out knife and then redo.
Sand and finish knife

If there are any mistakes please tell me.

Where did you get the 1075? I haven't used it a lot but when I did I had a hard time getting it to harden in oil. I had to use brine. Now I realize that I probably needed to normalize before hardening.

I live in NZ and just up until recently it use to be impossible to get metals good for knife making over here. But I got the 1075 from a guy who brought it over from Australia in small quantities. They now have a website called https://www.artisansupplies.com.au/?c=dab83b10fbbe (no point really looking into it if you are not for aus or nz)
