2 Person Backpacking Tent Recommendation

Eureka Apex 2. I have it and it is a great tent. I used it in my time at Philmont Scout Ranch for 2 weeks every night, and i have probably close to 50 nights in it so far. Nothing goes wrong with it, and i'm not sure but my friend has the same tent in green instead of yellow, not sure if its an Apex 1 or a newer model than mine.

Eureka! Forte SQ 2XT is green. It looks like a decent tent for the money.

Check out geartrade.com for great deals on tents. I was able to pick up 2'ppl 4 season tent for 200.00

From personal experience doing an 8-day trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, you can't go wrong with the REI Half Dome.

whatever you decide on make sure it is OD green, tents are hard to mod lol. I generally choose the same color schemes though I would rather blend in than stand out. I will check out that bag recommendation too.

I had an older version of the Apex 2 for many years. I used it hard, mostly for motorcycle camping. It was the only tent that Ive ever actually worn out.

I replaced it with a Kelty Gunnison 2. A similar tent, but with aluminum poles instead of fiberglass, pole clips instead of sleeves, two doors, and a larger fly with vestibules.

Haha. :D Doesn't really have to be green, I just don't care for the bright colors. I like earth tones better, but yes, I am an OD freak. ;)

I have used both of these tents for years and they work great for my wife and I

Big Agnes Seedhouse 2 (I would get the seedhouse 3 for alittle more room)

Mountain Hardwear Lightpath 3

I use a Mountain Hardwear LightPath 3 as a two person tent. Not free standing, but that's the price paid for weight savings. Unless you like ultra-cozy and keeping the bulk of your gear outside, go with a three person tent for two people.

we really enjoy our Black Diamond Hilight 1-2 person tent. Light & durable, but pricey.

Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate the help.

I use a sierra designs clip flashlight 2, it might be worth checking out. Im 6'1" 185 my wife is small (5'4") it's been plenty roomy for us. It works great as a one man when the wife doesn't come, tons of room for fishing gear! It's right at $200 straight from them but you might can find it for cheaper. It's also under 4 lbs if you're weight watching.

Good luck!

Warrior,

I have the MSR "Hubba Hubba" and love it. I just use it for solo camping. I also have the MSR "Holler" (3 person tent) which I also use as a solo tent, but it has much more room for two people and their gear. I really like the ease in quickly putting these tents up, and in addition, I can carry the "Holler" in my back packs with no problem.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciated.

Riverwarrior, what is the packed size of the Holler?

Riverwarrior, what is the packed size of the Holler?

The MSR specs state the "Holler" is 18" x 8" packed. I compress the tent and fly down very small and usually put the frame in an outside pocket on my Frost River and Osprey packs. Even though it's a little heavier than the "Hubba Hubba", I don't notice the extra weight when I'm packing it....although, I'm not hiking 20 miles a day when I'm in the woods....:D

Thanks for the heads up, appreciated. That's the same way I would pack it.

Sorry for the delay. Just a few pictures of what goes on during a short (2 days, 1 night) in a 3 person 3 season tent (Ferrino Stardust) from start to end in winter conditions. This is a hike (no heavy climbing involved, so we will just call it a hike), to the Aneto (3400 something m high) in the Pirinees Mountains (right on the border between France and Spain) to years ago. We took the Coronas route instead of the most usual way. It is less crowded and you can pitch your tent by the Coronas Lakes (alpine lakes indeed, not suitable for swimming on that time of the year!).

I am the one with orange jacket, blue pants, brown hat and mostly leather gloves (lined).

Drive from Bilbao to the parking lot (6h), park, get our shit together, hike from 1000 to 2600 or something like that. Quite a few hours. Late night tent pitching as its bests!

Another shot, almost done.

View from the inside out.

What we found when we woke up. Gear stayed outside so we could use the "porch" to cook, put on our boots and stuff. Water and warm clothes stayed inside.

About to start hiking.

Getting there! This section is much easier when there is a lot of snow. The more iced, the better.

Out of the rocky sections and almost there.

You can see the summit in the background (metal cross). This is called the Mahoma Passage (or Paso de Mahoma in Spanish, if you want to google it)

Crossing it, one by one, there is not much room for error.

And right on the summit!

Taking a nap before taking everything appart and hiking down to the van.

I guess I totally highjacked the thread... Sorry for that. Anyway, what I wanted to point out is that, as anyone can see, three guys (and we are not that big anyway, the tallest one is 1,73 and weights like 70kg) have a hard time doing anything but sleeping in a tent. Not that we wanted to do anything else!
If you plan to stay in the camp for any extended period of time, don't stick to a two person tent!

Mikel

Can't complain about the REI Half Dome. I've had one for years, and it's still going strong.
