Well, there goes the wind out of my sails - fortunately, it will be replaced with the money that will be staying in my wallet. Another GEC Remington Bullet Knife would have been an immediate purchase - but this? I think I'm out.

On the surface, 2024's (what the heck happened to 2023, btw?) Remington Bullet Knife, 'The Waterfowler', appears pretty underwhelming compared to the previous two years. In fact, the video accompanying the release seems to highlight the 2022 Remington Silver Bullet Granddaddy Barlow (GEC) and the 2022 Remington Barlow (Bear & Son) more than this latest release. Kinda odd...

Fairly obviously not a creation of GEC, but does anybody have any insight into which outfit is behind this one?

Thoughts?

My first couple of Bear's years ago really put me off them and I haven't seen anything to change my mind at this point.
Certainly not this.

Why do you all think this isnt a GEC?
I can't recall GEC ever doing a jigging pattern like the one present on this knife. I also haven't seen a GEC bird hook that looks similar to the one shown. I've not seen GEC use a blade such as that half serrated thing - is it a spey or a spear? GEC cuts such great swedges - how come none of these blades have any? The blade etch seems, IMO, bizarrely placed. Zoom in on the shield and look at what appears to be excessive and messy inletting all the way around - I've never seen such shoddy inletting from GEC. While zoomed in on the shield, take a look at that bullet - the projectile looks inflated - now take a look at the GEC bullet here:

One of those I'd be willing to chamber, the other - I'll pass.

Finally, and I guess this is the biggest issue for me - the whole thing just seems to project an inelegant air, especially in comparison to the known GEC releases.

Where to start? 😁

Honestly, having handled my share of GECs, it’s obvious even at a glance that they didn’t make this. The factory edge/bevel doesn’t look like GEC, the sharpening choil doesn’t look like GEC, the partially serated blade, the lack of swedges, the jigging, the shield, the pins, etc., etc.

I've cleaned my fair share of birds before. What's that hook for again?
It's for field cleaning the birds while carrying in your vest as you continue to hunt, keeps the spoilage down. You insert the hook into the bird through its vent, then twist and pull - removes the entrails and the meat will be sweeter once cleaned and cooked. My Dad used this Buck 321 for years and gifted it to me about a dozen years ago when he quit bird hunting. OH

That's...

Must be a northern thing. If I cull a dove or quail. The brest is torn off the carcass to clean it. And if you just wanna remove the guts before walking back to the truck. You reach up into the egg duct and you pull the guts out with your fingers. After pulling the head off.

What happens when that hook tears the intestinal structure and smears bile and poop on the meat?

It seems kinda barbaric standing in a field. Using a skinny hook to yank guts.

Never seen anyone use that hook either. Because if it was the sure thing. I would have seen people make such a hook out of a coat hanger. Haven't seen that either.

Earlier this year I heard about a Remington/GEC release from a dealer. This doesn’t appear to be it. GEC has done bird hooks in the past, so that could be on the table. Might be like last year with an initial BS release followed by GEC.

Thanks, then fingers still crossed!

It's still weird they're calling it a "2024" bullet knife when there were two "2022" bullet knives and no "2023" bullet knives. Maybe, if there's a GEC Remington to be had, it will be stamped "2023." For me, I don't really care - but I figure something like that could really burn a collector's toast.

I looked at images of all the GEC bird hooks I could find and, at least to me, none of them resembled the one pictured.
