On USAKnifemaker I see they have "302 Stainless Steel Shim for Damascus" with no info on what it's used for. Is this for layering Damascus much like using a layer of nickle between layers of carbon steel to see a nice bright line in the final billet? Just what is it used for? Inquiring minds wish to know:)

It only works with martensitic stainless steels or a few high alloy steels like D2 or A2.

When used with carbon or low alloy steels, the 302 takes on too much carbon and creates a new alloy that can’t be annealed, drilled or bandsawed.

IIRC, Chris Marks tried it with 304 HT foil on a few on my san-mai and suminagashi billets. It didn't work well according to him. He went back to a shim of pure nickel, which we both preferred.

Thanks Hoss 'n Stacy - ya'll confirmed what I was thinking. BUT - just wondered why they'd even have it listed and what it could be used for.
