317...what was it made for?

Just for the heck of it, here's a picture of a 317 alongside some other hunting knives. The second was my dad's knife, a Western Boulder. Number three was my grandpa's knife, a Schrade Walden. The last one is my hunting knife, a Buck 110 2 dot.

3 generations of your family and their knives passed down. that is just great, Sir.

so found one. .....bought it to try it out........15448987875717736412347885543304.jpg 15448988304472007743152213815828.jpg 15448988668512529842320440160685.jpg

kinda hard to find without paying a big chunk....online. it's big and heavy. I can see why those who like 'em like 'em. I'd only carry this size in a belt sheath. even with a lanyard to keep it upright in my pocket. too big and heavy for me to pocket carry. now got to find a sheath........gonna look for a modern material one, designed for something else that will fit it.

This is older but dragging it back because 300 threads don't come around all the time like 110 threads do.
GSEA has the most custom 317s of the Buck Clan. Besides the serrated blade model there are three or four more special issues with ink printed and stamped blades issued by SMKW's. I am getting too old, I swear I did a write up either here in past or on BCCI website. (Looked quick here but did not find)

The old fancy one I have is one rehandled by ANZA knives of AZ. A red and yellow wood (? laminate) scale. I will look for photos but your making me go dig..ha

Lets see if it works.

Guess it does.

My father carried a Buck 317 when I was a kid. Just found one on eBay NOS, and for a pretty penny! I know this thread is 6yrs old, but hey better late than never
Will post pics soon
no bother. ya can always start a new thread too. that's preferred on the forums in general. no one minds newer threads.

welcome to the Buck forum.....look forward to your pictures and participation with us.......

Great old thread. I’ve always liked this style of knife. While I don’t have a Buck version I do have a Case version that has never been carried and an old Western one. Both were given to me.

Great pictures on this thread and also good to see some old post from Dave Martin.

I concur with you guys; I really miss David’s writings. And the 317 is a beautiful, if somewhat large for me knife. I keep an eye out for them at local gun shows. I have a Kabar version of the 2-blade hunter. I always suspected it was made by Camillus.
