3M sanding sponge for convex edge?

I have a knife with a convex edge that I have not been able to sharpen using the mousepad method. So last night I'm refinishing a riflestock and was using a 3M sanding spondge with 320 grit when it hit me. The spondge seems to be of perfect density. So I took out the knife and tried using the spondge. It seemed to have worked easier than the mousepad, or at least it's sharper than it was before. What grit do you guys go up to?

IMO a sanding sponge would probably be way too soft, it would be very easy to round the edge if you applied much pressure at all. Also I don't know if the abrasive is really suited to working hardened steel.

Personally I like to maintain convex edges either on a regular benchstone, or using wet or dry SiC or emery paper or cloth on a tough rubber sanding block, the kind used for auto body work. The popular mousepad method I feel is also too soft, again the problem with rounding the edge unless you use light pressure and maintain really good control.
