Each blade received 1 wipe from 1 clean sheet of Costco Kirkland paper towels right out of the box first out of the sheath. Tried to keep photos the same, but kiddos kept me moving around the kitchen, so no perfect photos here. Not other commentary on differences as I really don't have any comment being my first experience with Survive Knives.

Your thoughts are welcome, but I was expecting something beat up I'd want to use, not essentially a factory new. Probably a dead body under the handles? For the record I knew which one was which but upon looking at the pictures would have picked the wrong one myself.

From the pictures, I picked the wrong one. I thought the coating on the brown one could have been flawed, probably just a camera thing though.

I got an UB4.7 recently and unless there's something terrible underneath the scales, the only ugliness I could find was one small bubble or uneven spot in the coating...one speck the size of a fine pen tip.

I would've been content paying full price for it.

The Betty's are nicer than I could have hoped for [fingers crossed a 3v 4.7 UB still to come]. In fact the on the cfv 4.7 I was expecting the coating to be the major flaw and I was going to strip it, do a forced patina, add liners, Tony's grips and use a leather sheath to protect the wood handle. Maybe after the finish gets a whole lot of mileage, but for now just the wood grips and leather sheath. Great knife especially for the $ and the ugly betty logo is kind of growing on me.
Down the line after the 2cd gen orders are done maybe an actual S!Crap logo limited could be offered and eliminate scrap all together- Only half kidding as I would probably have to buy one or three.

Nice work adding the interactive aspect to this thread :)

I guessed wrong! Maybe it was the lighting on the coating or something that made sheath marks way more noticeable.

Thanks for the pics!

Clearly the UBs are pretty nice in and of themselves. Great value to my way of thinking.

The ulgies are a phenomenal value!
The only downside is the lack of a warranty but I've never used a knife warranty yet (fingers crossed, knock on wood).

I'm sure Guy can spot it right away, but I feel like I'd be nitpicking to spot the flaw(s). How is that at least not a 2nd?

Agree, I was expecting off factory new enough to notice for sure, finish issues for sure. As trevitrace mentioned above which you echoed, this was at minimum a heck of a deal, right up probably too much of a deal.

I can't tell which is which unless I turn 'em over and check the labels. Fantastic value.

Are the UB less sharp perhaps ?

I once joked that knives get labelled "second" or "ugly" when Ellie might distract Guy, she took offense to the suggestion that they would EVER send out a knife that isn't properly sharpened. I believe her. Eventually I'm going to buy one of these and I hope it has something so wrong with it that it cannot be missed. I feel like labeling it "Ugly Betty" is just cruel if so many of us can't tell the difference ;) Like that box of old-spec GSO-5s that was just sitting around until Ellie finally put them up for sale.

Got my Ugly Betty today... still can't find what makes it so. See for yourselves:

You might notice I changed my fasteners to black... I thought it would look better and I was correct :p

Check out the S!K fastener compatability question - new gen vs old/current gen thread for the details.

I have no idea what makes it an UB but when I get mine I will use her hard !
Hope that didn't sound too brutal

Ride em hard, and put em up wet, unless they are 3V or CFV, then wipe em off before you put em up.
