I’m getting ready to heat treating a few knives I’ve made out of 52100. These are not forged, only stock removal. I read this article by Larrin Larrin to determine how to go about it.
https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/05/13/how-to-heat-treat-52100/

It mentions a series of normalizing steps, followed by a quench and then cryo and tempering. Then I referenced Larrins book, and it only mentions a 1500-1525° austenitizing, followed by a temper. No mention of the thermal cycling steps in the above article. So, can someone with more knowledge than me tell me which would be e best protocol to follow?

The article tests used forged 52100 so the prior processing was required. The article says, "it is relatively likely that using other anneals (or using steel as-supplied from the manufacturer) would lead to similar properties with the same 1500-1525°F austenitize."
