52100 Paramilitary II for good measure

Rust has not been an issue on my
52100.

I keep the blade dry and oil free on the
exposed cutting area.
Pivot is the only part oiled.

A good wipe down if it's wet material.
Washed with dishd soap because it gets used for food prep at times.

Edge maintenance is a breeze.
Almost as good as my Gayle Bradley.

So why has not this limited edition of 52100 cf PM2 sold out? o_O At $175 the price is not high.

In a folder , is toughness really needed as much as it is in a fixed blade? Aside from one , all my fixed blades are 1095 (coated). So I can see where that steel is handy. Good for chopping and camping duties that require a good size blade that's easily sharpened in the field without the fear of chipping.

But in an edc folder (for my uses) , I don't see much need for such tasks. The corrosion issue alone in carbon steels seem to outweigh any benefit that they may have for my uses. Again FOR ME , I'd much rather take a top stainless with high wear resistance like S90V and S110V over top carbons like 52100. Just having to keep applying Tuff glide or Frog Lube is enough to turn me off. Of course , I live @ 30 feet from the Atlantic so it's quite s bit salty and damp here.

But a carbon steel with a DLC coating is a different story. I see the appeal there. Like the Manix M4 DLC.

Anyway , this is just my opinion. I'm not bashing carbon steels at all. To each their own.

Ability to be taken down to very thin and polished without much effort is another factor. My 52100 by Bluntcut can cut credit cards without rolling. Spyderco 8Cr rolled tested on same card. GB M4 only rolled tiny bit. I come to respect 52100.

Don’t get me wrong, I like stainless, ZDP and M4 easily rusts in my pocket (I have that sweat). VG10 has enough stainless properties and gets screaming sharp easier than S110V that’s also quite stainless.

Nice. I do appreciate a steel that's not a nightmare to sharpen.

All I do is keep it dry...
When wet with food... Flush with hot water...
Canned air to blow out any water and re-oil the pivot. WeaponShield

Same maintenance routine I use for my GB1 and M4 manix.

I just bought a used one and got it today, very nice knife. My all black pm2 has been my all time favorite edc for a while now but I love blades with patina. Mine had a weird dark line across it, no rust though. Took the blade out and soaked it in vinegar for a bit and now it’s a mostly uniform gray. Looking forward to using it, but don’t know anything about 52100. Compared with the S30v of my all black will I even notice a difference?

Sal, thanks for the 52100 knives! Rapidly becoming one of my favorite steels. I just love how easy it is to get it scalpel sharp and the edge stability is superb! I have a Manix, a Mille, and a couple Para's. Would love to see it in an Endura or a Stretch.

I forgot to mention the carbon scales are great. Very different from other spydercos I've had before, the look and texture are just great. Now my best problem is deciding what to carry each day.

I'm torn, I'll pick up both if supplies allow (one knife per week or my wife beats me lol). I love the manix line, But DLC kills it for me. So PM2 will be next.

I can’t get enough of this PM2. Absolutly love the edge that it takes. I have a Manix but it’s been getting zero pocket time because I just love this PM2 and the way the blade has been gaining character. Not a huge fan of the Para 3 since I like larger blades but I’m looking forward to picking that one up too.

Thanks for giving us so many options Sal.

Right
Endura and Stretch models are made in Seki. We've used super blue.

Right, I forgot about that! Guess the Vtoku will be the next similar steel coming out in the Endura and Stretch. Thanks for all these luscious steels!
We really are spoiled!
