Thank you, I'm new to bushcrafting(not camping)& love it when I see a thread like that explaining a method of WS I'd not considered before.:thumbup::)

Thanks Mykel, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Not sure why I hadn't already thought of it...but it just popped into my head a while back and I wanted to give it a go.
 
It makes sense,the punk wood will/does smolder for a long time.
My friend (63 yo) woman just told me about using ironwood as a coal extender when she was in the girlscouts way back when(50s) in PA.
She was the youngest to make Curved Bar (eagle scout equivalent) at 13 yo.
I gotta get her out into the woods again.She hasn't camped in a long time she says.

Sounds like an interesting woman to hang out with. Maybe you should get her out for a weekend in the woods!
