A few questions about dust collection/shop venting...

Gene,
You shure learn a great deal about shop air polution as a woodworker. A little easier to deal with in the knife shop, I believe, the metal falls to the floor quicker. ;) ;)
Fred

I was a custom furniture maker, for 30 years, before I took up knives.

Fred, I also have a JDS 12X24 filter attached to the ceiling. I run it when I'm surface grinding, but it runs anytime I have a woodworking power tool turned on.

Gene,
Is this JDS 12x24 just a regular electronic air filter that hangs from your ceiling?
How do you guys feel about the cheap Rigid brand or Delta brand air cleaners that sell at Lowes and Home Depot? Are they worth buying, or should I buy something else?
The air filter, would of course, be IN ADDITION to a dust collection system.
I am trying to find a good air filter to hang from the ceiling also, that won't kill my bank account.

I think they are all pretty good if the right filters are used. Highland Hardware sells a top of the line pocket filter that makes these units really shine...probably $40-50, but you could start with basic unit.

Dust collection variations, albeit for woodworking, are covered in the book "Setting Up Shop" by Sandor Nagyszalanczy. He talks about the benefits and detriments of putting the collection unit outside the shop and recycling (or not) the air back into the shop. You could see if your local library has a copy of that book for you to check out.

Woodshop Dust Control is by the same author and deals with dust collection only. The first book covers many other aspects of designing, building, and using a woodshop as well as the dust collection system.

Check out text info on the dust catching funnel of Jeff Higgins at the link below. Since the pics don't work at the link, I put a pic of it I archived at the bottom of this post.

Some info can be gotten on this webpage of a wood carver who has several air filtration units in his two-story shop/studio/school.

Here's a shop-built two-stage dust collector powered by leafblower motor.

Below is the picture of Jeff Higgins' funnel for catching grinding dust. Note that he only turns the Shop Vac on to suck up the dust when he is done grinding. The vacuum is not running while he grinds.
