Aftermarket belts for Work Sharp tested today!

These are 1/2"X12" belts correct?

Reply... better late than never. Yes it is the 1/2"X12" belts. Having said that about the 240, the same problems with the MX 400, 800, 1200, the SC 1800 and SC 6000. . They snapped at the adhesive seam of the belt after about an average 6 to 8 passes on each side. The Snap (breaking of the belt) is caused on the up stroke (left side of the sharpener). The down side (right side) no problem. Having said that and instead of returning the belts, I sharpen knives with "Those" beelts only on the down side (right) of the sharpener. It's a PITA but it works after a few trials and tribulations. Conclusion...my recommendation is if you plan to use the WSKTS Work Sharp sharpener, don't purchase the MX or SC 1/2"X12" belts from Micro Mesh. if you are going to use the left side of the sharpener. Bye the replacement belts from Work Sharp. A little pricey $1.75 ea, worth it and uncomplicated with no problems compared to MM at .59 cents ea with complications.

Aloha.

Has anyone found another source for Micro Mesh belts? I like the idea of a finer compound if someone makes belts that don't break at the seam.

I love my Work Sharp, and I would like to get some different grit belts. Is there a source besides micro-surface.com? The shipping is killing me. The total for 20 belts was a little over $10. The shipping was $12.50, and the belts probably don't total more than an ounce or two in weight. I called them and they said that was their minimum freight charge.

Have you checked Work Sharp directly? They now offer a much larger variety of belts than they did when they first offered the WSKTS. Their shipping and cost of belts are more than reasonable compared to the above mentioned site.

Blessings,

Omar

I checked with them, but unfortunately their belts cost $1.75 each instead of .59 at micro surface. Their cheaper shipping kinda washes out with the higher prices.

Can someone link to the Work Sharp thread mentioned in the OP? I tried to search but it brings up every thread with the word "sharp" in it.

I've never really looked at these before and the Ken Onion edition available in Oct has got my attention. I'd like to read up between now and then.

Thanks.

EDIT:

Found it!

What size are Work Sharp belts? I went to place an order with Micro-Mesh this morning and all they show are 1/4"x13". I thought stock Work Sharp belts were 1/4"x12"

EDIT:

Nevermind. I found they are 1/2"x12".

Many thanks for this thread. I was wanting some belts to fill in the gap between 220 and 6k, and couldn't find anything. I do want to know how the MX belts fit with the stock 6k belt? I want to get some scary sharp edges, but I don't want to waste money on redundant belts.

I checked the website and only see 80, 220 and 6000. I'd be happy with 2 durable belts that fit in between the 220 and 6000

The new belts don't say anywhere what size they are.

The new belts are 12" x 3/4" except for the finest (6000) which is 12" x 1/2". I can confirm that the Ken Onion 6000 grit belt is the exact belt used by the original Work Sharp so you can run the old belts on the K.O. version.

Those have been on the WS website for quite some time and should all be 1/2" x 12", as they were made for the original WSKTS.

The exception would be the "WSKTS-KO Replacement Belt Kit" which would be 3/4" x 12", except for the 6000, which as sinnyc points out, is 1/2" x 12".

I mean I guess I could get them and trim 1/4" off with some scissors...

Kidding. If I trimmed it I would use a belt cutter, and since I am fresh out I guess I will need more info before I buy anything.

I contacted Micro-Surface today and asked about ordering custom 3/4" x12" MX belts for my brand new Ken Onion Work Sharp. They require a min order of 8 belts per size, and the price would be $0.90 per belt versus the standard $0.59 each. It requires a 10 day lead time because the belt seams need to cure. I spoke with a very pleasant lady who was familiar with the original WS, but hadn't heard about the new Ken Onion model. I spoke about the new improved features, and expected they would start getting more requests for 3/4 inch belts. She seemed very receptive, and indicated she may even be able to add that size in a week or two. She did say if they started getting more requests, that would almost guarantee that they would add the 3/4 size.

So, if you are considering the KO model, or already own one, give micro surface a call and ask to speak to the custom order department.

Nice work. Might be worth trying to get a group buy going if they don't add them as a standard size.
