All stainless Buck 186??

Thanks for the heads up, I sent an email to quarterbore, hopefully Porterkids will contact me soon.

Maybe I could get in touch with Joe Houser, or Leroy Remer thru email or here on this thread.... Don't see a trip to Idaho in our future, lol..

Porterkids is someone I can vouch for. He walks the earth like a giant in my opinion.

Joe is a busy fellow and rarely posts here. However, Buck history is one of his specialties. Direct email might be your best bet. You will have to wait for another 25 years if you miss this Summer's BCCI meet in Post Falls.

Leroy, the legendary talented craftsman, has his own site where you will find contact information, google Triple R Knives for his site, and he does not post here. The telephone is your best method of contact if seeing him in person won't work. His bulletproof glass folders are the bomb. I covet his Selector customs.

Oregon, thanks again for all the info!
I started to call LR this morning as soon as I got to the office... then hung up when I realized that our 7:00 am in Florida is his 4:00 am in Cali. :o

Will give him a call this afternoon, hopefully he may have some input. I'll post up some new info as I get it... you guys have given me quite a few leads to track down.

And the investigation continues...

Well.

I emailed Leroy Remer the photos, he just called me back and I talked to him for quite a while. What an awesome guy! I know he must be a busy man, but he totally took the time to answer my many questions. Here's what I found out:

Oregon, you were right about LR being involved in its construction... He personally made this knife himself way back in the day! :D :D :D.
His exact words were, "Boy, you sure got a rare one there!"
He said it was hand made at the Custom Shop by him in the mid '80s. Unlike the early Mickey Finn / Phrobis prototypes, this one is not serialized or marked, except for the Buck tang stamp. The handle slabs are original Buck 440c stainless bar stock (not sheet metal like I thought) from the shop, just not heat treated. The rivets are spun just like the 560's, the lock bar is shaved down to accomodate the skeletonized hole clearances, and both spacers at the butt are shaved as well. The entire knife was bead blasted just like the Buckmaster 184s.

He said I can talk to Joe Houser to get a COA for it. He also offered to do any work on it, just pay shipping both ways.
Thanks again guys for putting me on the right track by talking to Leroy Remer. I'm sure I don't have to tell y'all, but this guy is the MAN!:thumbup:

Very cool Convex! Looking at the pics that knife has some really nice machining, Knowing that it was made by Leroy makes that a pretty awesome score! Congrats!

You have to love the occasional knife you come across with a great story like that!!

Congratulations on a fantastic find.

Terrific information for enthusiasts Convex. A successful search for information on a rare baby rare esoteric prototype and Leroy, the Da Vinci of cutlery, spills the beans. You've documented, via the discussion in this forum, a datapoint on the history of the 186 for future generations. Thank you. Keep it safe as it travels thru time just as others did for you.

Thanks guys, I really wouldn't have been able to find out more about it without your advice. Buck sure makes a nice knife! I'd like to take some better pix of it so you can see some of the details. Maybe someone can post some pix of a production 186, and I'll take some from the same angles. Would be cool to compare em. I don't have another 186 or 560.

Thanks for the pix! Man that 560 looks good in champagne, great combo! Will try to get my own pix up soon, had some camera battery issues, gotta find the charger lol...

I had no idea the Oregon coast was SO beautiful! Is that where you get to wander around? Very lucky!

I am lucky beyond measure. Really. There is a national wildlife refuge just down the street from me where Bald Eagles paired, mated and reproduced this year:

The coast is just a short drive for me from my homestead. I live in the mild-mannered Willamette Valley, about 20 miles South of Portland. Born in Berdoo but lived in the valley since the age of three with a two year exception while in Honolulu back when women wore flowers in their hair.
