Amazing RUSSIAN KNIFE ART

I have been given many copies of the Russian Knife Guild's annual catalog. The work is truly humbling and mind boggling.

They tend to really go beyond my (our?) sense of art vs usefulness. WAY beyond....

...and I'm happy to smile in awe. :)

Thanks. Looking forward to more.

You said it so well, Jim, although I have the feeling that for many
this quality of knife related art seems not to be their cup-of-tea...
They want to see bold and dramatic b l a d e s....

So to show a real Russian blade, here is an example of the work
of Ilya Yuryevich Kulikov, from a section on Russian knifemakers
in my next book...

All the best,

There are knife users, knife accumulators, (working) knife collecters, art knife collectors, and investors.

For an investor, these knives would be a giant leap of faith.

For an art knife collector, something may strike a note, and the next thing you know, one of these makers is the flavor of the month.

For a (working) knife collector like me, there is not a lot to offer here other than an appreciation of aesthetic, and a rejection of function...adequate I am sure, but not a significant improvement over the status quo.

Hope this made sense.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Usually Steven, there is much sense in what you write...

This time too I am sure there is, but as you suspected it was just to complicated
for me although I found myself with a huge smile on my face... :) :)

Meaning that somehow I liked what you wrote because it sounded correct...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

BTW, the jaws on the push dagger close shut when the
handle is gripped in the hand...

Hello Kevin,

My 10th book on Modern Custom Knives, "The World of Art Knives" Vol. 2
will be introduced early next year....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I will be looking forward to it David.
While I like some more others here, they are all interesting.

This is the entrance to the Russian BLADE SHOW.
It is held in Moscow twice a year and usually has
between 22,000 to 24,000 visitors....

Maybe (maybe!) I shall introduce my next book at this show
in the Spring (April) of 2014...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Thank you, David, for your post. As a carving Artist, I look for inspiration, everywhere. These carvings are jaw dropping and just go to strengthen my theory that there are no limitations to creativity.

Here are three beauties by Andrey Koreshkov (Russia),
a carved push dagger on a carved ebony stand and two forged knives
with acid etched blades.

From one of the sections on Russian knifemakers in my next book.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Here is a spread displaying the story and the knife art of
of the Russian bladesmith Maria Arkhangelskaya, as part of the section
"The Feminine Touch" on women knifemakers and women knife collectors
from around the world.

This 56-page display from my next book features 27 women....

Truly exiting stuff...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Here is an Art Knife Sculpture by Andrey Koreshkov from Russia,
who also created the beautiful push dagger that I posted earlier...

His knives are displayed in my next book in a section on
Custom Knifemaking in Russia...

All the best,
