AMAZING -- The Sonic Blade

From Wookiepedia (the free Encyclopedia)

"The hum of the vibroblade gives it away. That's the only reason I still have my face."
―Captain Nym, after a bounty hunter attack on Lok

Vibroblades were a type of bladed melee weapon that used ultrasonic vibrations to increase cutting effectiveness. The weapon's hilt or handle usually contained a compact ultrasonic generator, causing the blade to vibrate at an incredible speed, making even the slightest glancing blow become a gaping wound. Vibroblades were popular among criminals, resulting in them being banned on many worlds. Vibroweapons were common around the Jedi Civil War because as personal energy shields began to become common, blasters were proving ineffective, whereas a vibroweapon could cut through them and the user with ease.

It's light years ahead of its time!

My uncle uses a similar knife to cut turkey and ham at Thanksgiving/Christmas. It's quite useful for those purposes, and no better than a normal knife everywhere else...

Can lightsabers be far behind?:D

Electric knives are actually pretty handy tools. I wasn't dissing electric knives, just the mega cheesy infomercial. I still prefer my 10" gyuto for bird carving. Slices like a laser. I can break down chicken and turkey quicker than that electric knife can...But i've had some Chef Training. The electric knife is a good tool for anyone that doesn't keep their kitchen knives sharp and well maintained. Not so much on the sonic knife...it looks like it's a crummy design.

Lightsabers are used by cattle farmers. They cauterize the wound of the cow. That way you can get a leg or two, and not actually have to slaughter the cow. Once you take 3 legs though, you can only get ground beef.

Haha I was just going to mention that vibrating blades have been a staple of science fiction for years, often for a sword or axe the concept is that it could basically make it able to cut through anything such as a giant robot. Until actual laser or heat blades such as the lightsaber are invented there really wont be any significant improvement on personal cutting instruments, and even then while a plasma blade might make a wonderful weapon they would be mostly useless for actual cuttting tasks. You would literally ignite anything you held it near so no utility or anything of the sort.

Back to the topic at hand:

The thing is pure garbage, as another poster put it, it is a glorified electric carver. A well sharpened kitchen knife will perform better in most every regard and it wont make an annoying noise or be nearly as unwieldy. People go through their lives never learning what a sharp knife is like and they just assume that all knives are as dull as theirs. When they are actually presented with a truly sharp knife they often tend to cut themselves because they are used to doing unsafe things with their kitchen knives such as holding them by the blade. However, there are people who own good kitchen knives and take care of them and they are really wonderfully skilled in their use.

It's true. People who have never seen me cook before are amazed at home quickly I can prep veggies and meat.

"WOW how do you do that?"
- Sharp Knives
- Good technique
- Practice

I only ever use a gyuto, a petty knife and a santoku. I'd LOVE to get a good chinese meat cleaver.

Martin Yan is my cleaver hero. The things he does with his cleaver are astonishing. So dexterous!

THEORETICALLY.

It is possible to get something to move that fast.

Leaving aside for a moment the fact that the original post is garbage, there are some technical challenges.

It is difficult to generate that many cycles per second mechanically. I suppose that a piezoelectric element could be used, but then I'm not sure how that movement could be transferred to the blade. Likewise, since we are probably talking about a lateral movement, relative to the spine of the blade, essentially separating the cutting media, careful attention would have to be paid to harmonics, or the blade could easily fly apart, with imaginable consequences. Undetectable flaws in the structure of the steel, introduced during the machining or heat treat process, could cause the blade to essentially explode, the first time it was brought up to speed.

All in all, I'll stick with knives the way they are.

Robert Heinlein had vibroblades in his SF stories many many years before Star Wars. Who knows if there was something before that (I wouldn't be surprised)

So basically that sonic blade does everything my Opinel can do....except it makes its own noise whereas the Opinel requires me to make the sound effects.

"Your family and friends will go gaga..."

Yep, they sure will...and ask me why I bought such crap after spending years here and on other forums.

If they were smart, they would market a "bushcraft" version, then a "survival" version.

Then...a toxic green "zombie" version.

They wouldn't be able to make them fast enough.

You are so right except for one thing.

It needs jimping so it can get a thumbs up from nutnfancy as an emergency tactical knife.
