I want to make my own anvil (for costs and utility). What I want to do is get a piece of low/high/whatever steel about 6" sq. all the way around and then mig a piece of O1 or 1095 6" sq. 1" thick on the top. I will mig feet on the bottom and attach to something large and heavy/solid. I will put a radius on one edge for drawing. My questons are:
1) Will the weld hold? (I have a Millermatic 250,it welds deep).
2) What hardness should the face be?
3) Or could I just buy a cheap carbon steel anvil and mig a hard face to it(I know you can't Mig cast iron).
Anybody thats in the know your information is greatly appreciated.
