My old man has carried a 110 most every day for 50 years. It's his go-to work knife. Not babied like many if us here consider an EDC. He cuts tape, pipe, packages, and more with it. It gets used to scrape grease from around the lubrication points on our machinery or dig out mud from his boot treads before he gets in his truck. He's owned maybe 6 over the years. 4 of those I have given him as gifts for birthdays/father's days. None are beyond repair.
Then 110 is a classic. My old man, a Harley guy, most likely sought one out when it became THE knife of the biker. It just worked for him, and he has spent more days on this earth than now with one on his left hip or in his pocket.
We all have a thing that springs to mind when we think about our folks. It might be their cologne or the way they woke you up in the morning as a kid. For me, when it comes to my old man, I will always think about the wear mark in the pocket of his jeans that matched the exact outline of his 110. When I got in leather bending a decade and a half ago, my first project was a sheath for him. Over the years, I've made half a dozen. Many ugly and crude as I learned my way, but he still carried his knife in them with pride. He popped a stitch or blew out a rivet, he asked me to fix it. With each sheath I made, the better I got.
He still keeps one of his "nice" 110s I gave him as his "going out" knife in the last sheath I made him. The sheath has been reinforced 6 ways to sunday, but it's still too pretty for him to wear on the job. He wore it to Christmas dinner.
The 110 is not my favorite knife. I dont carry one anymore as they are a bit heavy for what they are, and I have moved on to higher end stuff. However, if there were a vote about my family Crest, our coat of arms, I would lobby full tilt to add the 110 to our name. It's been integral to our family identity. I know neither my brother nor myself will ever be able to look at a 110 and not think of our old dad.
