Anyone Use or Have Their Knives Sharpened with a Tormek

Tormex should work fine. Belt sander works fine. Freehand works fine. All these methods have produced top quality knife and tool edges. The difference is the guy using it. Someone can freehand a knife into the trash can. And many have. That doesn't mean you will. And as far as subjective goes on sharpness, I've seen some Bess rating on knife edges produced on a tormek followed by paper wheel. Much finer than anyone would ever need. Know thyself! Is an old saying. Some guys don't mix with power tools. I used to do a little restoring with buffers on straight razors years ago. I have NEVER got the blade caught in the wheel. Some can't help but do that every time they use it. I've used dremels with stone and sand paper drums and have reshaped razors as well. Never killed an edge or.burned the steel. Some guys will do it and 100 times out of 100 they will discolor the steel and kill the temper. Anything is possible. But it's more the driver than the car.

What Bill3152 says.
In the Netherlands there's this old proverb: "Het is niet het machientje, maar het mannetje"
Translated that would be: "it's not the machine, it's the man"

Bill: “Someone can freehand a knife into the trash can. And many have.”

I have, but I’ve found I can do it more efficiently with power tools.

Maybe it’s not the arrow, it’s the Indian.

Good one! 😀

I had and used a 1x30 belt sander for awhile but never felt comfortable with it, probably because there was no one to teach me the fine points in person and I didn't want to unintentionally damage expensive knives. I only freehand sharpen now, but then I don't do high-volume sharpening.
