Dr. Peter Buck, co-founder of the Subway chain of sandwich shops, has donated a piece of his late wife's jewlery to the National Gem Collection at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. The 23.1 carat Carmen Lucia stone is now the largest and finest faceted ruby on public display.

Did she ever get to wear it, or did he buy it for the museum after her death? The language they use is a little mysterious.
The jewel was obtained with funds donated to the museum by Dr. Peter Buck in memory of his Brazilian-born wife. Post declined to discuss the price....
Post said Mrs. Buck, a native of Brazil, was proud of having become an American citizen. After her death her husband, a co-founder of the Subway sandwich shop chain, decided to arrange for the museum to acquire the gem as a gift to the nation in her memory.

In any event, I am very glad to know that so much money has been made in the making of convenient, tasty and reasonably-priced sandwiches.
