Are the Snaps Necessary?

I'm making a leather sheath for my BK14, and I've created the shape beautifully to add a thumb snap to keep the knife secure. I've seen a lot of sheaths on here that seem to just hold the knife in via tension. I'm not sure if I will be putting a belt loop on the sheath, but I most likely will. I'm mainly asking if the snap is necessary to hold the knife in, or will tension be enough? I'll probably be wearing it on my belt during hikes and want it to be secure in there. But I also might throw it in my pocket at other times, so I want it to be as stream-line as possible. Adding the snap is no issue, I have the strap already made, but if I don't want it, I could just cut it off.

It usually depends on the shape of the knife. Retention can be built into the welt if the blade shape allows for it.
If done properly, it's all the retention it needs.
A picture of the knife would be helpful in getting others' opinions/recommendations.
