Art Knives?

As an artist and industrial designer, I'd consider buying a knife as nothing more than a work of art. But like others, it would have to be an actual, well made knife as well. (Not that I can actually afford such luxuries)

Usually, all the ones I've seen, have been well made, with proper materials, by a smith. That first picture, while not purely practical, looks like it would function properly as a dagger. I'd put it in the same category as pistols that are highly decorated with scrollwork. They all work and function, but they're really meant for presentation or ceremonial purposes.

When it comes to art; beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Embellishments on what suppose to be a functional tool,
(Seeing that they cost a tad higher than a walmart special)
is a pursuit solely for the aristocratic at heart
So, if I had a silverspoon in my mouth
It wouldn't hurt none to have a couple
To ogle at over fine wine.
L'chaim...
The art knife's evolution is the highest form of
masterful knife craftsmanship.
Of which expands the basic idea of mere usefulness into something reaching the pinnacle of extravagance.
It is a definitely something which stands as a testament
To a master craftsman's skill, as much as it is a folly
In the eyes of folks who don't see the point of art.
But Lets not include any off-shore factory made art knives into this category
As worthy investment material.

This. A solid gold, diamond encrusted knife isn't going to be very functional as a knife...its a paradox.

sure it is!
almost mere trinkets that won't pass the simplest of batoning.
Likely fragile by design even??!
hmm. but isn't diamond harder than steel?
feeling like an emperor already!
it would certainly please his majesty to see
an art knife encrusted with double rows of exceptionally pointy diamonds instead
so that it pleases his majesty to royally knight all non-art knife snobs with that :)

Nice to see all these points of view!
How about some pics of knives you like for their artistic value?
Or even examples of what you don't like?

Whereas I do appreciate the artistry and the workmanship of the art knives - more often than not the elaborate artwork takes president over the utility of the knife which is why art knives are not my thing.
