Australian knife import regulations has taken another turn for the worse. On Dec 14th, the list of Prohibited Items was changed to specifically include 'Single Handed Openers'!.

The concerning thing is how they've chosen to define what a 'Single handed opener' actually is. From the customs factsheet, it's been defined as:

'Single handed opening knives that have a blade recessed into the handle that can be opened with gravity, inertia or centrifugal force (including parts)' - (quoted from op on post on spyderco forum)

and later in the comments page, this. Have just been advised by Aus Customs that the UKPK has been classified an 'Assisted Opening Knife'!! What on earth...

Im just hoping NewZealand doesnt follow :(

so it's down to only traditional slip joints now, basically?

do they at least have a reasonable small fixed blade law?

if it looks like a fighter , its a no go I think. And yeah, i guess its down to slippies. If only SAKS had better steel, Would keep the collectors and steel junkies satisfied. I know of an aussie who spent ages getting on a list for a custom knife (i believe uses a spyderhole) . I wonder how it will go for him

I'm from Melbourne, Australia and recently received a Bark River Little Creek in the post with no issues.

The thing to consider is that if it looks like a dagger, it'll probably be inspected and if it's double edged, you'll have to get a permit to import it.

Standard single edge fixed bladed knives haven't been affected by the new laws (yet).

The nany state does it again...government knows best :(
I agree; the government down there has gone full retard. Honestly, I feel bad for Australian sportsmen. They are getting the shaft left and right. First, the great gun grab, now this.

Madness!

When I think of Australia, I think of Kangaroos, Large yummy cans of Beer, and MASSIVE Blades.

I just cannot fathom an Aussie that is uncomfortable around a folding knife in a reasonable situation.
( muggings not included).

I also feel bad for the sportsmen and enthusiasts there.
Laws and restrictions only apply to law ABIDING citizens, not criminals and idiots.

so great that i can still go to ANY hardware store and even some mall department stores and buy a stanley knife, it's basically an otf without the spring.

all bad.

it's less about stopping crime and more about controlling citizens. like most anti-tool or weapons laws.

great if you can get a special collectors permit to own a assisted opener, or whatnot, but when i think about that...what good is a knife truly if you can't carry it with you anywhere but your house. guess it doesn't matter if you live on your own large acreage or preserve, but if you live in the suburbs and city....it means you can own a knife you can never really use anywhere but home. that doesn't appeal to me at all. it's like having a permit to be able to own a bbq grill, but not allowed to cook outside on the porch with it.

if anyone thinks we are safe here in america...think again. there are folks working on something just like this here everyday. good thing we have Mr. Ritter and his crew working hard everyday to knock the knees out of these types of legislation for us. all we can do is make sure our reps and senators hear us (being polite and courteous of course) more the anti's non-logical noise, and of course spend your 35 bucks or so and join up to knife rights....so when Mr. Ritter's group contacts legislators and says i have "x" number of members in your district, etc they will actually listen.

I'd rather carry what I wanted and take my chances of going to jail. Makes me want to move to Australia and lobby against this BS.

THis a very peculiar world wide phenomenon, to witness governments around the world banning knives and cutting tools. Most of the world already is not permitted to own firearms of any kind, soon they will have no blades either. The US is already banning knives left and right, so far has been more successful than banning guns, but that will come in time. NY, Mass, CA, and several others have already begun, the rest will follow they always do.

You are correct; gun laws in this state suck! Last October, I went to the local police station to renew my FID gun permit. I forked over the $100 check, went through all of the B.S. paperwork and the Lieutenant entered the data into the computer. He pushed the "send" button and off it went to the Firearms Support Unit of the Criminal History Systems Board in Boston. Two months later, still no word. I am on my 90-day grace period now. Had to download and print out the details on the grace period, since I went hunting while carrying a shotgun on an expired permit. I carried this paperwork with me in case I got stopped by a LEO who was ignorant of the law. Even a state trooper that I know never heard of the grace period. I actually risked arrest in order to engage in my favorite sport! The licensing authorities didn't waste any time cashing my check, though.
As for knives, MA kind of falls in the middle. Some cities have their own local ordinances prohibiting the public carry of knives with blades longer than 2.5", concealed or not, unless you meet certain requirements (actively engaged in hunting/fishing, coming/going directly from those activities, chefs carrying knives directly to work, LEOs, on-duty military, etc.). When in Boston, Cambridge, Revere, Beverly, Lynn, Salem and other North Shore cities, it is best to carry all knives concealed. Arrests for violation of local ordinances are a routine thing. My own town doesn't have any such restrictions, so I only have to worry about state law. At least up to this point. Anti-weapon legislation gets introduced on a regular basis in this state.

Sorry, but not all of us are willing to just roll over and let those opposed to our freedoms have their way. If gun owners had taken that same attitude years ago, then we'd not made the progress we have protecting our Second Amendment gun rights. The proof that it doesn't have to happen is right there. Now, Knife Rights fighting for our knives, just like the NRA, SAF and others have fought for gun rights. Instead of just bemoaning your presumed fate, giving up to the darkness, perhaps you should support an organization that is making progress turning back the darkness. I doubt we will win every battle, but we will win the war if everyone stands with us and we continue to fight the good fight.

Make no mistake; we are fighting back against the loony liberals and their sympathetic legislators. Here in MA, we have G.O.A.L. (Gun Owners' Action League) and have made some progress. GOAL even put out the word on a proposed Boston ban on the retail sale of knives a couple of months ago. The problem is, most people in this state do not own a gun and have no desire to do so. Most don't even carry a pocketknife, so they really don't care about "carry" laws. Did someone say "sheeple"? Kids in MA schools are brainwashed by liberal teachers, media and School Resource Officers (local police officers who patrol the school hallways and provide an armed, uniformed presence) who constantly tell them that firearms and knives are bad, only police and military should have them, etc. Anti-gun and anti-knife legislation is always introduced with the hysterical cry that it is "for the safety of our children" or some such nonsense. The sheeple, especially the soccer-mom types, suck it all up like a crowd of drunks at an open-bar event.

I am a paying member of both Knife Rights, and the NRA thank you very much.

I never said anything about "rolling over" or not fighting back. But in case you didn't realize, in a lot of cases of banning knives and guns throughout history, the governing party did not ask the people or allow us to vote on it, they just banned. I while I fully support Knife Rights and the NRA, and have the utmost respect for them. I still acknowledge IMO they are fighting a losing battle in the long run. When the government begins calling certain tools and objects "weapons" it is amazingly easy to convince the ignorant masses that those said tools are not good for public safety, and there are soooo many more of them than "US". Knife Rights and the NRA are not fighting the Government, the people(us) are the government they are fighting against ignorance which is a very long and ugly battle, that is often lost. Once the "sheeple" are convinced to fear an object it is so easy to remove that object from the public.

Sadly, this is the reality we live in. We live in a age, now more than ever IMO, where the public wants to "FEEL" "SAFE" and "SECURE", and will criminalize anybody and ban anything to obtain that feeling of safety and security no matter how false and shallow it might be. It is easier for most people to ignorantly believe in the evil of an inanimate object vs. the evil in the human soul. The first one is controllable, and that is what humans seek. I think the great, and awesome folks in Knife Rights and the NRA realize this, but they do and SHOULD always continue to fight against it.

Whenever in history, has it mattered at all, that something "didn't have to happen that way". Yes, there is "proof" that the attack on the 2nd Amendment "doesn't have to happen", it is still happening though, isn't it, (even though proof that something doesn't HAVE TO happen is kind of an oxymoron). At the end of the day the Constitution, as wonderful and close to perfect a document it might be, it is just that...(dramatic pause)a document, ink on paper, an inanimate object. The Constitution is not a supernatural being, it does not have special powers to stop evil and corruption. It is a tool for "the people" to keep alive and use in the fight against evil and corruption. IMO "the people" dropped that ball a long time ago, and a few have been fumbling in the dark ever since to get some sense of it back.

Bear with me here, I'll get of my box of soap and set it ablaze it soon, I promise...

Now, if you could explain anything in my previous post that was UNTRUE, not unjust, not unlikely, not unchangeable, UNTRUE - not in accordance with fact or reality. On a final note, sometimes "giving up to the darkness" is the best way to truly know the enemy you are faced with...(silence, dramtic fade out)

Ok I'm done, box of soap on fire, breaking all fingers to spare you from any further ranting:D:foot::rolleyes:....unless I can get one of those voice activated typing computers:eek::eek: Da..Duh..DUHHHH!!!!!:eek:

Dave,

Thanks for your support of Knife Rights. Sorry, but I cannot accept you point of view as reality or "true." Loss of our freedom and in particular, loss of our rights regarding knives, is not inevitable. At least not for this country as a whole. If I thought that were true, I certainly wouldn't be doing this. We will have to agree to disagree on that point. See me in a decade and we'll see who's reality is correct. The jury is still out. :D
