This axe was found here in Virginia in a Civil War camp.I know that doesn't mean it was made at that time.Rehandled.It's different from the Civil War period axes we have foundCan anyone here ID the type or maybe the maker.I've never seen another like it.

I'd agree except for the dimensions. That is a full sized axe head. Very interesting.

Maybe someone had a blacksmith forge out the worn heel on their axe and this is the result ?

The ever important, helpful and informative, "top down" shot could resolve the speculation about this being a modification. The form though in and of itself is nothing unusual with the drop-down heel or cheek indicating that it can be gripped in a particular way for particular work. Could it be for carpentry or boat building? you get the idea. If this is a relic from civil war it would make sense since there is and was plenty of woodworking going on in connection with men slaughtering men.
