Okay, when last I posted about this knife I was looking to make out of lawnmower blade steel, I was adviced to do a test quench to see if the steel would harden.
Now I did that, that the steel did get hard, so I went ahead yesterday and forged and grinded out a knife blank,,,

I did the heat-treatments (2 times) in Texaco type "A" quenching oil that was heated to 160.
I used a O/A torch and heated only the cutting areas of the blade...

The blade did NOT get hard....

Now thinking back, I believe that when I did my test quench , I did the quench in water...so perhaps this is a "Water quench" type steel?

anyway today my question for you is,,,How do you do a edge quench with water?....same as the oil edge quench or is there a different step?

sounds like the problem to me

with practice,,,,practice....practice (did I say) practice swiping it through a water bucket will do it.
your looking to quench the edge,,, doing it this way just the edge and a
curtain depth of the spine will harden leaving some of the center as a spring
temper once you temper it. it has to be done fast and not left in the water too long,, that's where the practice comes in..
I've don't this way and it works pretty nice
