I am looking for a new day pack and have it narrowed down. My question is about the black packs. Do they seem hotter than other colors? Like a black shirt versus a light colored one.

I don't know about hotter, but my black gear shows the dirt and dust more than other colours, like coyote brown or ranger green, for example.

I'm thinking of the Maxpedition colours, as that is what I use mostly.

I think ranger green is about the nicest colour going in a pack, personally.

Yep. Depending on where and when you're hiking that can be a good thing or a bad thing. In cold weather, it will help keep your water liquid and your food unfrozen. If you're hiking in the desert, it will help turn your water into steam and cook your food.

From my own experience with a navy blue pack hiking in the AZ desert in April, hot peanut butter and and jelly sandwiches leave something to be desired.

Another thing to think about is visibility, Do you want your pack to stand out so people can spot you easier?

I have grown to like Foliage Green over black. Black is very "tactical" looking to me and shows all of the dirt/dust.

The Foliage Green seems more civilian friendly, it is mostly grey with a hint of green. Also, you blend when out in the woods. It doesn't yell out "military " to me as much as the coyote brown and olive green or "law enforcement" as much as the black.

I use green or desert if it is on sale- I keep a bright orange bio hazard plastic bag in it for visibility/water proofing for rain/stream crossings.

I work for a school district, and let me tell you that all colors and styles go. Blacktical, OD Green to Hello Kitty Pink. Many of these high school kids that look almost my 40+ (without the white/silver hair) carry all the brands from REI and Cabelas in addition to Military surplus.
Personally I like green. OD, Forest or any other green. I rarely use black because in the occassional rainbreak here in the Northwet, the sun make them get too hot for my liking.

Actually I prefer Bright Orange (I have two day packs that colour), hope it get me found sometime when I am unconsciouses beside it. I use my OD pack only when I am on military service.

I found a big safety orange frame pack in my grandma's basement a while ago, aint gona misplace that in the woods!

Unless I'm pheasant hunting, I don't like standing out in the woods. I also don't like having a camo pack that screams "there might be a firearm inside me." Therefore, I like subdued colors like OD green paired with coyote brown or tan gear. Blends in but isn't as in your face as camo.

Black is my least favorite color, heats up and shows dirt. Okay for a book bag or travel bag around town. Doesn't look to military. I like coyote or tan for hiking. I try to avoid camo. I like the new foilage green but have too much gear to invest in a new color.

Good point.

Can go both ways though.

Say your backpack is also your BOB bag , do you want the latest kickbutt Maxpedition tactical pack in coyote ( which to those on the 'know' stands out like a beacon that you are carrying good stuff ).

Tradeoff's.

I'm not too partial to black. I like the coyote and I like green. My newest pack.....

My GoLite Jam is about the same color.

I have a day pack that is yellow and black-- both show dirt of one kind or another. And I look like a 220lb bumblebee :)

something to consider besides heat and being seen is actually accessing what's in the pack.

i find that with black bags, especially of heavier cloth, it is hard to see inside the bag because it doesn't bounce light around well. with lighter colored material it is much easier to see what i am trying to get at in my back.

i normally go for subdued colors, but try to avoid looking military-esque
