backpack color

i'm partial to full on olive drab. I hate looking like all the Mountian Equipment Walmart yuppies (hey look at me and my bright colored outdoor gear that is all brand name and labeled all over!) that plague our hills here. I much prefer to blend in and hide . If i need to be found, trust me i'll be found. thats not an issue.

I don't know about hotter, but my black gear shows the dirt and dust more than other colours, like coyote brown or ranger green, for example.

I'm thinking of the Maxpedition colours, as that is what I use mostly.

I think ranger green is about the nicest colour going in a pack, personally.

Mark, which pack is that? Full sized Condor?

something to consider besides heat and being seen is actually accessing what's in the pack.

i find that with black bags, especially of heavier cloth, it is hard to see inside the bag because it doesn't bounce light around well. with lighter colored material it is much easier to see what i am trying to get at in my back.

i normally go for subdued colors, but try to avoid looking military-esque

I couldn't agree more with finding things, not to mention tripping over a black pack all night at your campsite. Pack, color... blend in or subdued color is nice on all our eyes (orange cap or bandana in hunting season ok). While we're discussing black on the woods, a black sleeping bag is nice. Dries real quickly in the sun.

While I love subtle tones....my Osprey Atmos 65 looks great and is highly visible in RED

I think that having a highly visible color has it's merits in the wilderness.

I have a pack in OD; it is nice and subdued and I like it. It's very easy, cheap, and lightweight for me to throw a big orange contractor bag in there if I want something bright and visible. Certainly cheaper and easier than trying to black out, as it were, a big orange bag in the event of needing to disappear.

Of course it would require me to consciously decide to be visible, so if I fell off a cliff and knocked myself out, I guess I'd be screwed. OTOH, I look pretty cool with my OD bag. And really, isn't that the most important thing?

One thing I've liked in the past about civvy looking bags and gear is getting to talk to the MEC/REI types who are all friendly until they notice the gun strapped to the bag! Many make excuses and hit the trail immediately. The others turn out to be pretty cool people - so it's a bit of a BS detector I guess.
