Beach and knives

Hey,
I recently decided that I should get a knife to carry with me in my shorts when I go to the beach. I was thinking in one of the spyderco salt models, likely the dragonfly.
My question is, am I being rational? Do I really need a knife in the beach? Its just that I feel naked knowing I don't have a knife at hand if I need one.
Do you carry knives in the beach? If yes, which model?

Thanks in advance.

I still carry an OLD first production run HAK aither tethered to my shorts or on a piece of paracord around my neck. Not so sure about the new Artmis systems, but the deign is solid and small.

You should always have a knife on you. Even at the beach. However, cleaning sand out of a folder doesn't sound like much fun to me so I'd opt for an Izula or some other small neck knife.

Salt series is an excellent knife to have at the beach and is easy to clean out. You never know when you might have to untangle a sea creature from some fishing line. Don't get a Izula, it'll rust just thinking about going to the beach.

No you're being completely rational. Even if you don't keep it in your pocket, just leave it with your towel and cooler. I'd opt for a simple swiss army knife. They're stainless and are pretty easy to clean up after getting sand in them. But the salt series should serve you great as well.

Titanium MPU would be perfect for the beach. No worry about rust, no folding mechanism to foul and 40% lighter in weight than a steel knife of the same size.

Bottom one here:

Just get a small dive knife, they're designed for salt water and don't have any joints to clean sand out of. Definitely don't get anything in carbon steel like the izula.

I've been on vacation at the beach all week, I just decided to carry my Kershaw Echelon because its small and I didn't want to bring one of my "really good" knives. I wanted to get a Dragonfly Salt but didn't have time to get it before I left but that's a good choice also.

if you don't want to worry about cleaning or rust, this little fixed blade is completely rust proof.

or, if you're like the millions of people who can manage to use carbon steel knives in and around the ocean with no problem, you could just do that.... last time I was at the beach I had a non stainless knife in my pocket the entire time, and two non stainless fixed blades back at camp that did food prep. didn't get a spot of rust on any. go figure.

I would probably carry something small and non-threatening... There are a lot of kids and soccer moms at the beach who would probably freak out. That's a lot of drama I don't need.

I would also try to take something with a Teflon coated blade... That would help with rust. Definitely don't bring anything with a bead blast finish to the beach :)

What are your needs? If you're thinking self-defense, forget it altogether. What tasks will you need the knife for? Are you going in the water with it? Are you by yourself or with others? Are you leaving stuff on the beach if you're in the water?

The Spyderco Salt was made for this reason exactly.
Light weight, rust proof, and rinses with water.
Why have a fixed blade bouncing around when folders clip nicely to the inside of your shorts?
I carry my ffg endura at the beach and around any water and have had no problems at all.

"Oh crap, guys. I accidentally only brought my non stainless knife, we better turn around. People on the internet said they will rust too badly."

^^^ Silly pirates...

I'd definitely pick something more corrosion resistant; maybe carbon steel is not the best choice for the OP's application.

I've had S7 rust like a beyotch that was coated in hoppes gun oil (or so I thought:foot:) in just one night in the sheath and bare52100 seems to literally corrode in my hands as well. Anything bead blasted quickly gets rust spotted as well.
Maybe I sweat acid? :confused::D

I always carry my Spyderco Pacific Salt when I go to the beach or for a run inside my waistband so it doesn't get lost.

I wear a neck knife at the beach. You can really go with anything in stainless. I carry the coldsteel double agent

Is that a knife in your shorts or are you just happy to see me?

I carry my Spyderco Pacific Salt to the beach. And when it gets dirty, I just clean it with the ocean. It's nice to have a blade if you get wrapped up in some loose kelp or netting or just to open bottles.

Rational? I dunno, depends what you are doing at the beach. I own a dragonfly salt and HIGHLY recommend it! I live own the beach and surf and fish everyday. If I'm going fishing, of course I bring my knife. If I'm going surfing, of course I don't! I actually watched a nutnfancy review of the pacific salt the other day and he talked about body boarding with a knife. Omg, I lost all respect for him! Seriously, he sounded like such a kook! Dude, nobody surfs with a knife! Aside from looking like an idiot, you would eventually lose it or hurt yourself.

So, evaluate what you are doing at the beach. You going to lay under an umbrella and have a picnic, sure, bring a knife. You going to be snorkeling, diving the reef, sure, bring a knife. You going to spend your time in the surf, swimming, body surfing, etc...nope, I wouldn't bring a knife. It's a liability. Take all that for what it's worth, but know that it's based on everyday experience for many many years.

But whatever you do, DEFINITELY get the dragonfly salt! It's AWESOME!
