Beach and knives

"Oh crap, guys. I accidentally only brought my non stainless knife, we better turn around. People on the internet said they will rust too badly."

Now that's priceless!!!!:D

I have a plain edge salt that I swim with at the beach. Saved my life once. I got pulled off my surf board by a 7' bull shark. He had me by the calf, and pulled me down about 8' before I could get my knife free. I stabbed him about a dozen times in and around his eyeball before he finally let me go. Somehow I managed to make it to shore before I bled out. 87 stitches.

Ok, that never really happened, but I do carry a salt in my shorts at the beach, and I did use it once to slice up an apple for my kids at a boardwalk pizza place. Great little knife.

If I know I'm going to be in sandy environments, I will carry my pocket puuko. No moving parts for sand to bind up, rugged construction. Forged carbon steel blade, nice handle to hang onto, cuts very good. The whole thing fits well down in my side pocket of my nylon shorts that I use for beach going. I'll wipe down the blade with a little mineral oil in the morning, and that night I just wipe it down with a clean dry bandana. That's it. Shown with open Case peanut for size reference.

I'm a knife nut on the Gulf Coast so naturally I have a Salt 1, Dragonfly Salt and Pacific salt. Who cares if it makes sense or not. :) I use them when I excercise outdoors as well. Sweat is as bad as salt water. I tie my knife to my bathing suit if I swim. All of mine are yellow and actually blend in with our sugar sand when dropped. Black would stand out better, but I get bored with black handled knives.

Hahahaha...I was reading that first paragraph and getting nervous, thinking "oh my god, am I going to have to call this guy out on this bs??" ;-).

Actually, my salt knife did save me a trip to the hospital. Crazy crazy story, but true. Read it if your interested. If there was ever an endorsement for a "salt" on the ocean, this is it.

And if you are planning to swim with it, consider the surf. Gulf coast of Florida you are probably fine. The waves hear are a little bigger and you'd be a lot more prone to lose your knife. I have lost my shorts before and had my rashguards ripped off of me numerous times. Here's me right in front of my house last month...don't want a knife on ya here. ;-).

Awesome story. Nothing quite like being impaled by a treble hook with a pissed off fish on the other end. I was waist deep in a river once with a 4lb smallmouth on one treble hook of a rapala and my thumb impaled on the other end. I guess karma works for fish sometimes too.

I clip a griptilian with 154cm or a pro vantage with s30v inside the waistband of my swim trunks which I keep cinched fairly tight. I rinse the saltwater and sweat of at night, shake the water out and dry the blade. then i apply a little wd40/rem oil/ breakfree and put the blade away for the night. No trouble w rust. Sometimes i don t even need to oil the 154 cm. That steel seems to have very good corrosion resistance. In a heavy surf like shown above, I d put my knife in a zippered or buttoned pocket. I rarely go anywhere w/out a knife and the beach is no exception.

Once I was at the beach and didn't have a cigar cutter or a knife, Had to use my teeth on a nice cigar, never again.
I've got a cheap very small stainless neck Knife now.

Yeah! The ladybug! Those come in salt models too. That one you could even throw on a keychain and have it with you everywhere!

At the beach or a pool a carry a Gerber LST. It's light and easy to carry, easy to flush out sand and doesn't rust, and it holds a good edge.

Fishing line and nets are often abandoned on the beach; potential entanglement by these is good enough reason to carry a knife.

For beach activity a good folder will do. I have carried a Spyderco Police while at the resorts in the carribean and it came in handy, but watch the salt water. Sea water rusts everything quickly and I found out that the knife would quickly corrode unless I would rinse it off with fresh water after each visit to the beach where it came in contact with sea water directly or indirectly like being clipped to damp clothing.

For swimming with the snorkle a regular fixed blade dive knife is advisable. Swimming away from the main beach area by reefs carry the danger of entanglement from things like lost nets that drift in. Strap one on your leg for safety.

Check out a David Boye Dendritic Cobalt folder. The blade is Stellite and the hardware is Titanium.

On a public beach, a SAK won't even raise an eyebrow. I've taken knives with me on the beach in the touristy areas, actually in a shore town (OC MD). Found out that I had no problems with my Vic pioneer. Has a bail to attach it to your swim trunks (if you lose your swim trunks, you might have more to worry about than your knife). If you lose it, hey, it's not the end of the world.

Also, put your knife in a sandwich bag while you're on the beach (my cellphone, keys and Vic went in the bag and in my water bottle holder two years ago). Cut whatever needs cutting, then put it back inside the sandwich bag. Unless you have a clump of wet sand in your palm when you're putting the knife away, no problems.

BTW, I'm not going to OC this summer, frankly, I can't stand the crowds but I enjoy spending a couple days down there. Any more than a couple days and I want to go home. I will be going this fall after my sisters wedding. Might be a little cold to worry about which knife to take on the beach.
