Everyone raves about the BM 710, and after having finally gotten one, I'm among its fans. You just don't see much here about the 705 though.

What are some impressions? I held one at a knife and gun show, and it seemed a bit small. However, it might make a nice blade for dress clothes or for times when you don't want to raise alarm among the sheeple. I'm giving it some second thoughts on that account.

Any 705 fans here?

I own 2. One with ats-34 steel and one of the "forum knives" with carbon fiber scales and m2 steel. They are fantastic knives. They're my EDC when I'm at work or just hanging around town. The 710hs only comes out when I'm fishing, hunting, hiking, etc. Of which I do a lot in the summer.

Get one. I think you'd be quite pleased. :D

The BM705 is a great knife. I have a plain blade BM705 in my daily carry rotation. It fits nicely in a front pants pocket (even seated) and in the top flap pocket of some light winter jackets. In other words it goes places where a larger knife might not. Furthermore, I don't feel out of place taking it out in public.

Possibly the best little knife ever made. Can do every
thing the 710 does & is legal to have on you in most locals. I've carried one for going on 3-years & used it for every thing from field dressing deer to cutting up limes for maragrettas. Can't say enough
about this knife.

The 705 is a great, great little knife. In my humblest of opinions, the only small pocket folder in production that's truly better (for my purposes) is the Chris Reeve small Sebenza. Before getting the small Seb., the 705 was my daily carry for 2.5 years without a single complaint.

If the 705 saw a blade steel upgrade, incorporated titanium instead of 410 stainless steel liners (galling, yeah, I know, but heat-treat the Axis lock cutouts and polish them!), and was more disassembly-friendly, it'd still be top dog in its size range in my book. But I'm a knifesnob and custom freak now...

You really can't go wrong with the 705!

I also think you should go ahead and pick one up. It's a great little knife. I've owned two of them, I sold one and lost the other one :( . Just like Professor said, if I didn't have a small Sebenza I would have gotten another one already, their great. I plan on getting another one sometime down the road.

I've got a lot of knives I like, and a lot of knives I love. But when it comes right down to it, the knife I most often would rather have with me is my 705.

I've got two (the other is the Benchmade Forum Knife - a 705 with M2 steel and carbon fiber handles) and am thinking about getting a third.

If you do a search on the Benchmade 705, you'll see a lot of folks singing its praises.

A good solid, everday carry knife.

Get one; you won't regret it.

Another vote for the 705. It always seems to end up in my pocket. The blade shape is excellent for daily chores, the 154cm is easy to keep sharp, and it's hard to beat the axis lock. Best ~$100 folder I own.

I got the 705 last week and I really enjoy it. I use to carry a Spyderco Cricket as a small EDC. I like the Cricket but I wanted to get a bigger blade and start to see what a quality knife can do. (This is only my second knife.) After a few days of use I really like the 705. I looked at every folder out there for around $100 and I didn't see anything I liked better than the 705 for a small EDC. I don't think you can go wrong with the 705. Great knife.

The 705 is one of the very few folders on my want list. I don't think it could replace my small Sebenza. I wish more knives were available in this size range.

Guyon,

I had the 705 and 710; sold them both.

I prefer the 940's.

The 705 is as thick as the 710.

IMO it should have been slimmer.

Dean,
How does the regular compare with the limited edition in terms of thickness, weight, etc.

Also, how is the Carbon Fibre for EDC vs. G-10?
Thanks,
Rob

well, i have one, and it's "OK". but nothin to rave about imho. it was pretty dull on arrival, the handle is WAY too thick, the handle edges and the clip make heavy use VERY uncomfortable (i got blister cutting cardboard boxes). the ONLY thing i llike about the knife is the axis lock, which is really nice. i have a Mnandi, with a blade of the same length, MUCh thinner and MUUCH more comfortable handle, GREAT lock, and an UNREAL edge. i wish i hadn't spent to $$ on the 705 as i found it so uncomfortable i went looking for a replacement, and got the CRK Mnandi. wish i ahd just done that from the git go ... as always, this is just MY take on both ... hth

Although I own a bunch of knives, I always migrate to my BM 705 for weekends. The knife is a little thick for wearing with a suit, but when I'm wearing casuals, the 705 is always with me. The action and axis lock are smooth as satin and the blade is hair poppin sharp. I was so impressed with the 705 that I bought its big brother, the 710.

Well, I'm looking for one to try out: an inexpensive user... Want to sell your used one???
Let me know, shoot me an e-mail.

Bobby B asked,

"How does the regular compare with the limited edition in terms of thickness, weight, etc.

Well, the weight, thickness of the regular and the Forum Knife are pretty much the same. The main difference in feel is the lack of a spacer on the Forum Knife and the slick feeling of the scales on the Forum Knife.

As far as an EDC goes, I prefer the G-10. It's grippier and I like having a back spacer to keep coins and keys away from the blade.

YMMV,

Dean

Dean,

The Forum version you're referring is different from the May, 2000 Knife of the Month that had the aluminum handle with a carbon fiber style design, right? Man, I need a real carbon fiber version to complete my collection!

I've got 4 705's

705S Pre-Production 0652/1000
705BT First Production Run 0681/1000
705BT Normal Production
705-05/00 Knife of the Month

Until the BM940 came around, the 705BT was my EDC. Now, it sits on my computer desk for opening mail and such. It's such a great little knife, though, that I feel guilty for not carrying it.

How thick is the 705 compared to the Buck Mini Strider?

This one is pretty thick, too, especially in comparison to other knives with a < 3" blade.

Then again, where else are you going to get a 3" blade with 3/16" steel and extra-thick liners? (0.08? 0.09?)

Thanks!

-Jon

Whilst you were in hiding ;), Benchmade built us 100 forum knives with carbon fiber scales, M2 blades (BC1-coated), shiny clips, and stainless standoffs.

Very nice little knives indeed. Currently, there's a push for a 710 as 2002's forum knife with the same upgrades. Just thought I'd keep you in the loop...

Professor.
