Benchmade 761 TITANIUM FRAMELOCK

I don't mind a single thumbstuc too much, although I do like to flick open with my middle finger bug I agree, why the hell woul benchmade do a tip down only clip? At least drill some holes for tip up, I think most everyone in the knife industry kniws that tip up is prefered unless its a wave opener and I dont see a wave there. Still looks like a great knife to go up against a sebenza and if it was tip down, id say it was a definite competitor if not better with m390, im not a fan of crk's soft s35vn but the man gets knives. He should sue zero tolerance cuz crk knives are that, best fittings you'll find in the business. Im not a sebie fan but the knife is a legend and it deserves all the praise it gets.

Better here for a discussion then a dealer sales thread.

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to have someone drill/tap some holes for tip-up carry?

I don't know since I've never drilled in titanium, but I can't imagine it being difficult.

Does it have a steel insert on the lockbar, and does it have an over travel stop besides the clip?

No and no. KSF has a new picture of the lock-bar side and it does not have an insert or LBS. I think they were going for a Sebenza clone on this one (except for the carry position).

At the price point, it might be Sebbie competition, but unlike the original 750, this 761 is a very different looking knife.

Looks like a nice knife, but honestly, if I'm spending that much, I'd rather just pitch in a little extra and go for the large Sebbie. CRK's S35VN is not as good as M390, but it's never come up short in my admittedly light use. I am hoping they make a small version to go along with it, for variety-in-the-industry's sake.

Agreed. If the larger version goes well, a smaller one usually, looking at history, will follow.

Disappointed on the tip down only configuration. Benchmad seems to think that it is a safer way to carry, I would like to be the judge of that.

Tip. Down 3.5 or 3.25 blade would be prefered for my uses. My seb 25 will suite me better than this model.Southard is releasing a similar model also.

I had to call Benchmade and ask why they did tip down. She had no idea but said she would have engineering give me a response via email. While she was at it I told her to hand out pink slips, as well. Thats a huge fail.

Benchmade answered this question on their forum. The response was:

"We generally stick with tip down on liner and framelocks; reason being that without a progressive detent, it can be kind of dangerous to have that blade aiming up out of your pocket. We don't want people to slice themselves up reaching into their pockets for phones or keys or whatever."

I'm not sure what a progressive detent is, but I've never had this problem with any of my Chris Reeve, Sypderco, or Zero Tolerance knives. Maybe Benchmade is admitting that their detent is weak.

That sounds like a response made for a long time ago! Perhaps their detents get progressively weaker!

Anyway, it's nonsensical in these day and ages!

Already received a response from the engineering dept saying roughly the same thing. Its what I figured but hoped there was actually another reason. I stay away from CRKT knives that I like because of this reason. I just hate having that clip there when i'm holding a knife.

I just found my old Mini Skirmish that I got for $128 in September 2005. MSRP was $240 back then. What a GREAT titanium frame lock with S30V. Incredibly smooth. How did we go from $128 to $331 in 9 years! By the way, the Skirmish line was also a tip down only carry.

Funny how the product page for the Mini Skirmish says: "[Note: The skirmish design has holes in the handle scales, but are not intended for a lanyard.]".
