Benchmade 761 TITANIUM FRAMELOCK

My favorite BM, hands down. At ~$300, it has become my hardest user folder...and it never let's me down.

I like everything about my BM 761 except the weak detent.

That was one of the first things I checked at my local dealer before buying one. I opened three, brand new, fresh from the factory 761’s and conducted some detent testing.. All three were perfect. I feel that whatever issue their was before has since been resolved.

Good to know.

Test your BM 761 by holding it upside down, flick your wrist down and see if the blade opens towards the ground.

I got a 761 a year ago and the detent is very strong. Fit and finish are both perfect.

One or two bad experiences and negative speculation, incessantly repeated, seems to have a way of sticking with people. Too bad, because it is a very nice folding knife.

I performed that test in store on three fresh models from BKC. None opened.

Yup, that’s always the case.. I wish I picked one up sooner.. Life’s too short not to enjoy such great knives.

Great.

Mind you, mine is one of the earliest copies from November 2014 so apparently the issue has been fixed.

May send mine in next week. It's the only thing stopping me from carrying it.

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to have someone drill/tap some holes for tip-up carry?
I am not the world's handiest guy; for me it was a pain modding a 760 to tip-up carry. But worth every trouble. The titanium is very hard, required a special bit, or I did something wrong but I broke two before I got it done. But it's a user now. ;)

The 761 is fantastic knife. Awesome on many levels and one of my favorite BM's. I liked it so much I bought a second one. FWIW I have an early First Production and a later one and the f&f and detent on both is perfect.

BM really did good one this one!

Love it, will probably get it, but the clip is fugly and will go at my earliest convenience. :D

Smooth but gritty with enough texture to give you a fairly good grip.

Well put. That describes my perception or feel as well.

Edited to add Some gratuitous pic's:

I have first run #40, and while the detent is definitely soft, I love how fast and hard it deploys with a light thumb flick.
The tip down aspect doesn't bother me at all either, as I'm able to pull it out and deploy it fluidly.

It practically disappears in pocket because the profile is so narrow.

Why is the lightning quick deployment so important???

For an EDC knife isn't detent far more important?
Soft detent = a big negative imo (unless it can be fixed easy or unless its going into a collection and is going to spend its life sitting in a display case)

It’s a preference thing.

Until you actually get a feel for the thrust-bearing washers on the 761, you won’t understand (or appreciate) how smooth deployment is on this thing..

You can honestly feel a difference between how the 761 swings open compared to any other BM with standard phosphor bronze washers.

I wish all BM’s had them, even if the price went up a bit. Makes all the difference.

The detent issue is fixed. Go try a new one out for yourself.

I’m pretty sure the owner of my local dealer thought I was nuts, when I was trying to fling open the 761’s blade at different angles. I tested 3 fresh from the factory. None had issues.

Okay. Beautiful knife, no doubt. Great size and blade shape. M390 is highly regarded. But the clip position means it's a deal breaker for me. I'm used to tip up carry and I'm too damn old to change my ways at this point in life. I just wonder why Benchmade justified the tip down clip position based on the detent if the detent is not an issue. To my eyes, fairly well trained in the visual arts, it looks like the clip was sculpted and put where it is based solely on it being a design element. And that's okay, I guess. But I wish they had just drilled out a couple more mounting holes for the clip to make it more functional to old farts like me.

I hate it too, but I don't let it stop me if I like the knife enough. I have two Military's modded to tip-up, and the LfTi showed above I did myself. If the knife is worth it...
