I bought a Benchmade Sentinel back in the '90s brand new. I've never used it and it's still sitting in a box in my knife collection. I can't ever bring myself to use it. As a matter of fact, most of the very nice knives that I own I've never used.

Am I crazy? Or am I just eccentric?

There are two camps, one that collects and rarely uses, and the other that won't collect if not used. Both are "bats in the attic".

I have one I bought in 97. At one of those knife stores in a mall. Remember those? Mine has been used. The black coating on the blade was scratched when some dummy tried to sharpen it with a stone. Not my favorite knife.

Unless it has historical significance or is an art knife, it gets used. How else can you fully appreciate your purchase if you don't experience the thought and skill the knife maker poured into the blade design. If you're just looking at it you're only getting 50% of your purchase price.

And . . . by using it you may find that the highly esteemed knife maker flubbed it on that particular knife

Don't ask me how i know . . .
