What is your perfect 4 inch blade to take with you on your outings backpacking hunting camping etc... and why.

Vic Farmer. But my outdoor recreation never terms into "survival." Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I carry Fallkniven F1 in 3G.Simple,reliable,does everything well.Excellent steel and very easy to maintain.Hope that helps.

Bark River Bravo 1, or Bravo 1 LT
Fallkniven F1
ESEE-4

Man, always with the "survival" thing. :D
Perhaps if you read survival as woods instead, you'll feel better about it. ;)

My ZT 0561 or Spyderco Tuff are great almost 4" blades for outings, because they cut stuff and fit in my pocket.
The Emerson CQC-12 actually works pretty well too.

Someone will come along and "But you need a fixed blade!!!"
I prefer my fixed blades to be bigger; for the 5 inch and under length of blade, I prefer the carry convenience of folding knives.

Survival not my hobby either, but I prefer Mora Robust for hike/camp, $14 that's why.

But...any moment of any day could end up as a survival situation. The people in the towers on 9/11 never dreamed they would be in a survival situation..BUT... they were. The workers at the Moore Ok. plant never dreamed they would be in a survival situation...BUT...they were. We here on a knife forum realize this more that the average citizen so if we walk out of our home unprepared, we are twice to blame. My point is, we never know. I think that is the point of questions like this, to get opinions. My choice for a 4" blade is a TOPS Spirit Hunter. It doesn't look "tactical" so it won't get double takes. Any outing to the woods, the mall, to work, or school could end in a survival situation, so for me and lots of folks here, it isn't a hobby, it's a lifestyle.

I like a leuku from 4" up for bush. Check out any of the Nordic/Finnish knife makers....Ragnar, Wood Jewel, J. Martinni, etc... While you are there check out the combo rigs which include a puukko, although with only a 4" leuku you won't need a puukko.

An option for another good knife would be the DPx HEST II in fixed or HEST 2.0 in a folder.

The 'why' is that both have proven themselves to me.

Esee 3 or 4 at that length. They stand by their product with a no questions asked lifetime warranty. It can take lots of abuse.

Alan Blade/Ed Caffrey MEUK. It's the smaller knife in the picture:

Why? Look at it. Pretty functional.

Mora no 1. I love it's simple classic look and it is a great performer for the money. I also like the Mora Bushcraft and Fallkniven F1 but I have never needed the heavier blade and haven't felt like spending the money on either just to have.

Although not a 4", since acquiring I have not hit the woods without my Victorinox Farmer. It's a very handy tool to have in the woods.

Lots of great options that fit that description, but the only one (that I own) that I'd wager my life on is my GSO 4.1.

BRKT Bravo or Gunny
ESEE 4 / 5
KR Enki
Mora Bushcrafter
These are all great knives at various price points.

Probably the BK-16 or BK-17 in that size area. It is pretty much all you need unless you just want to play. I do prefer a Dozier custom over the Beckers or a Blackjack 125 (4.5" blade). The 4-5" range is my favorite size.

Another vote for Bravo-1... it does as much as you can expect out of a one-tool-option:

ESEE 4. Try to break one. Simple and effective, thicker stock than a Mora. My choice anyways.
