Best 4" camping survival knife and why?

I carry a Mora. Generally I'm more of a form over function kinda guy, but in that context you really just want an effective tool. Moras are great tools and they're cheap so you're not afraid to kick the shit out of it if you need to.

Yes how do you like the cpm 20cv I have the 5.1 on its way but thinking I want the 4.1 soon to come out in a few months in 20cv?

A 4" blade is about optimal for general duty and light but strong is the way to go. There are several companies that make great knives like this that are not expensive and some customs that are very expensive. Light and strong, not heavy and over built.

What is your perfect 4 inch blade to take with you on your outings backpacking hunting camping etc... and why.

I find slightly different needs for hunting, car camping and backpacking.

For backpacking, weight and repairability are key. I carry an Opinel and Leatherman Squirt.

For ski touring or other trips where my Emberlit wood stove replaces my Trangia or Svea stoves, I trade the Opinel for a Mora Companion HD.

For hunting, I prefer a hollow ground blade so the Opinel gets swapped for a Buck 110. It's an old one with 440C.

For car camping, the Opinel handles food prep and I add a hatchet for splitting wood.

If I had to pick just one, I would take the mora companion HD.

You might look at a Viruovice's YouTube channel. He's a hunter from Japan and his videos test many knives side by each. He's not posting so much right now but the collection of videos is stunning.

His favorite for both hunting and bushcraft is the BarkRiver Bravo II. But, in one video and compares his Bravo II to a Mora and concludes the Mora is almost as nice for 1/10th of the cost. I like the Companion with the blade convexed a bit.

I would rather cut meat with my Mora than process wood with a hollow ground blade.

Antdog, I have a Busse Basic 11 and yours looks a bit different, more slant to the nose. Is yours an older version or did you mod it? I guess it could be the camera angle.

I still like my Enzo trapper...but if I want a bigger 4" blade, it would be the ESEE 4 or HEST 4. (The HEST is more comfortable in hand, for me)

ESSE-4. So glad I have the RC-4-before they changed the name-much cooler name/logo! "RAT" is a cool knife name and perfect for this type of knife-"ESSE" is a salad dressing or something! :)

Personally i like the Viper Pointer, not the best pic, but too lazy to take a new one :p

I wouldn't say this normally, but you are dissin' the name. :D (kidding, your fine) The name is actually ESEE Which stands for "Escuela de Supervivencia-Evasion and Escape" Translated to: " School of Survival-Evasion and Escape"

Both are pretty bad-@$$

To the OP, I love my BK16, and ESEE 4. Take your pick, both are great.

Honestly? I would carry a mora. Even their more expensive knives are still really cheap considering other fixed blades. Yea it's only 3/4 tang, but it's still razor sharp, keeps an edge fairly well, very comfortable in the hands, and you can even baton some kindling if you had to without worrying about the blade coming loose. The best part is, you can abuse this knife and if it chips or breaks, it's super cheap and you can just buy another.

If you'd rather have full tang, I'd go with the Kabar Becker Crewman (BK10)
Or
Ontario rat 5, but for a survival knife, I'd go with the mora. Highly recommended. Either the heavy duty companion, the classic 1 or 2, the bushcraft black, outdoor 2000, or the bushcraft forest.

could I really be the only one that knows about the Ultimate Survival Knife

Nope, most people know about it. They typically choose to buy something else, though.

By the way, what you have pictured is the much better ultimate PRO knife, not the original ultimate knife. The original really sucked for most people, but I have the PRO, and it works quite well for normal woods use. I just prefer to carry something a little less ...... Orange? :p

Nope, didn't mod it at all. It's an oooooold Basic 9. It's one of the only ones I've seen that has the smooth coating and came with a leather sheath. I'm thinking it might be so old it was barely out of prototype stage.
