Best Bread Knife?

Pretty much which ever large serrated knife I grab when I need to cut bread. The wander around in my knife drawer, so it is not the same knife every time.

Mac makes a great one,,Henkells, Wustoff... all good.

Hi, I did hear about the Mac bread knife several years ago, but I never bought one. Which specific one is the forum recommending?

I presume the PROFESSIONAL SERIES 10 1/2" BREAD/ROAST SLICER (MSB-105) is the best one they sell?

Thank you,

JC :)

Spyderco long serrated kitchen knife. It works great, we slice our bread every day. Spyderco wrote the book on serrations and MB26 is a joy. I give them as wedding presents.

We have a Victorinox as a dedicated bread knife. However brownshoe brings up a great point. The Spyderco serrated utility knife is a superb all around kitchen knife which I'm sure can perform quite well multi-tasking as a bread knife.

IIRC, the serrated knives commonly designated as "bread knives" by cutlery companies work best for soft springy bread stuffs.

On the other hand, if the bread in question is not soft and springy, a large chef's knife works fine and may be preferable to the user. My wife makes a special type of bread which is very dense and which crumbles easily. I find an 8" chef's knife works better on it than a standard "bread knife".

A razor sharp one with thin geometry. Many bagels have opened wide for my Spyderco PM2 (S30V). It bites readily and just sinks right through till it hits wood. I know serrations get most love in this category but I really have run out of uses for my favorite knives and enlist them into duties other knives make more sense. Whatever gets me through another day and bagel.

You really need something 1/4 inch thick and about 10-12 inches long in case you need to baton through the bread in a survival situation.

Seriously though, any cheap serrated knife that is at least the length of the bread you are slicing should work fine. I'm partial to wustoff and henkel in the kitchen.

Victorinox serrated bread knife is thin with shallow scallops and an offset handle for good knuckle room. Affordable, too.
