Best handle for Reverse (Fighting) Grip?

Any time I get in a new small to midsize blade I find myself trying how it feels in a “fighting” grip. By this I mean tip down, edge forward.

I was surprised to find that although the Park Ranger fit my hand pretty well in a normal grip, it feels perfect in the reverse “fighting” grip. It’s very quick in hand this way, so light.

Other notables that have felt good to me if they had to be pressed from tool to self defense with reverse grip include the SoS and for a larger blade the Argonne Attack.

Do you guys even consider this when it comes to handle design? What are your favorites?

I know this is dependent on hand size. I wear a size 9 work glove so I consider my hands to be pretty normal size.

I like the AA, fusion handle, badger attack/tank buster type, also the new mini mean street

Most Busse's & Kin are amenable to multiple grips...

I think the Scrofa's are best suited for this application.

War Boar's Karambit style, naturally. Although I've never been too keen on the idea of locking my fingers into a ring on the handle because it seems to be a good way of dislocating/breaking a digit. Disclaimer: I've never been in a knife-fight....shocker, right?

Coffin Shapes like the Battle Pappy & Battle Shark are some of the most versatile of all handle shapes!

And I've found that the "triangular" shapes, like the HG55, are great at locking your hand in close to the guard in any grip. It kinda funnels your hand fore-ward against the talon guard in a secure fashion. The shape makes for a natural & sure draw. Good Stuff!

Don't overlook that the blade shape is equally, if not more, important to the handle in a reverse fighter.

But this gives me the opportunity to speak about my favorite Self-Defense knife-- A Spyderco Ladybug.

Yup...you heard me...the Ladybug.

I figure once I get disarmed by the assailant, it will be difficult for it to be used against me lethally. ;)

I bear no illusions of grandeur about my knife fighting skills-- or lack thereof. :p

Not by much... I strop weekly so its not an issue... Sharpen lightly every few months.

For my IWB fixed blade carry, I have my Custom Shop Sus. Blade design is good for off hand reverse grip, handle shape is comfortable, and I like the extended pommel to test my thumb on.

The blade is on my weak side (left) my Wilson combat EDC X9 right appendix, spare mag center line (all mounted on the Flex System to be able to put on and take off as a single piece of kit).

I agree on the Battle Shark as well. It is also one of my faves. Thanks for the thoughts P2.1!

Crosier,

So glad you posted this. I felt the exact same way about the PR. In fact every time I show it to someone I ask them to try reverse grip and they immediately have a different expression on their face. It just melts into your hand.

Side note. Charlie Mike, that is a pretty epic stach.
