Best stones to surround a fire pit?

Here in Hawaii its very common to use rocks to cook food, you have to use VESICULAR BASALT where it is available. It is very porous and has large pocks and holes throughout the rock. Never take rocks that could have been wet within a few weeks. I melted a hole in my brand new silnylon tarp from a flaming hot rock projectile.

I have two pits around my house at this stage in the game. I really like using white quartz rock as it seems to have a slight luminescence, maybe thats just me. The white rocks are also fun to knap on if you are sitting around it.

went ahead and dug a pit . a tad more work, and those are just regular old scavenged bricks. yes, they split n crack some...but after 15+ yrs ive never had to redo any of it. and it gets used LOTS
