Many years back, I got sucked into the black hole of YouTube "large/'wilderness' blades". My only excuse for letting that happen is that I'm a "Rambo"/"Commando" teen of the 80's, and the "one tool option/Survival Knife" thing was just implanted in my mind at a very young and impressionable age.
At first, the knives I acquired were just boxed "novelties" that I would occasionally pull out and admire. Eventually however, I'd pull one out and throw it in my truck for one of my excursions to some of the secluded Farms and Ranches here in South Texas. As you can imagine, it wasn't long before I abandoned my much-loved (*and much used) "Buck 119/Estwing Camp Hatchet" combo and started relying on some of those large blades for some unexpected overnighters. Since then, I haven't looked back.
That being posted, my vote is for a big knife...in whatever flavor you choose. Pair a large knife with the reputable folder you probably already have in your pocket and you're good-to-go for most things Mother Nature will throw at you.
Lately, I've been playing with my Work Tuff Gear "Aurora Borealis Kodiak" and my Scrap Yard Knife Company "DT-12" the most. As far as I can tell, the DT-12 is discontinued, but does come-up in the Busse & Kin exchange from time to time. (*Hell, there may be one available right now) The Kodiak is currently "out of stock". However, based on the popularity (*they tend to sell-out in minutes), I just can't see Victor Lin NOT producing more.
The capability of both of these knives is pretty mind-boggling...
You're fortunate enough to be living in a time when this conundrum is nothing more than a chance for change and discovery. There are SO MANY wonderful large blades out there that the sky is the limit.
Happy hunting.
