Hey guys. I've had a grippy 551 from cabelas with the black blade black handle for over two years now. The first week I had it I broke out the dremel and polished off the black coating where the washers sit to smooth it out a bit. Used it for about a year like that and then put it away for a bit to carry my sebenza. Broke the grippy back out yesterday and broke it all down and cleaned and lubed it. Polished up the area a bit more and now it's just like my non coated blade. I can flip it without the thumb stud finally (and I don't have the pivot loose). Has anybody else had to do this? Any idea why benchmade Doesn't protect the area before they coat? My spyderco military has a smooth out coating where the washers sit which is different than the DLC coating.

I do this with all of my coated blades.
Although, my latest grip in s30v has a black blade, but is extremely smooth.
Can't see me touching that one any time soon.
Cheers

I do this with my BK coated ones. I have an 810 that's cerakoted, but it was extremely smooth so I didn't bother. I have a cerakoted presidio that had that area covered during coating, so its had bare metal from the factory.
