"Black Box" Winchesters

A good deal for you!! Please show us the blades!!
Please don't think I forgot about ya. Dad's Hemoglobin was really low Friday so they admitted him to the hospital. He's doing better but not discharged yet. Today is the first day I've made it home before dark, so I took some pics of the blades. Here they are. Forgive my photography skills. 😆 Mine aren't near as good as other people's pics.

Does anyone have any experience with acrylic/celluloid handled Winchesters from ‘93?

I have been offered one but I’m reluctant due to fear of offgasing.

I’ve not had any of the Black Box Winchesters covered in celluloid, but I’ve had several of the Case Classics from the same time period made by Queen that has celluloid covers that deteriorated. I would definitely stay away from them. Just my opinion as some survive, some don’t.

That’s what i was afraid off. Probably why the price was so attractive. (For my market. Not many of these turn up).

I've heard they off-gas worse than most. My only celluloid Winchester seems to support this notion and is in a terrible state of decomposition. I picked it up, aware of its condition, to rehaft without guilt of ruining a finely made pocketknife.

I agree. Some of the worst I've seen. There seems to have been a run of this stuff about this same time period on
other knives produced at the same location.

Thank you guys for making it easy for me! A late Saturday night after a couple of beers I probably would’ve bought it planning to re-cover it. Any other day I know I’m not cut out for that sort of project. 😂

I've picked up several Case Classics for cheap that had deteriorated, but hadn't affected the blades to severely for the same project purpose of recovering. Only trouble is that they are still sitting there, naked...waiting on me to put some new pants on 'em.

Reminds me of ol' Gramps towards the end - just shuffling around the workshop with no pants on!! 😂
