My sebenza 21 and yojimbo 2 feel like they need a bath in some lubricant. However, i dont have any access at the moment to any of Reeve's lubricant, benchmade's blue lube, or any frog lube. Has anyone used break free clp on their knives? Is there anything in break free that may damage the knives? Are there any longterm effects to using breakfree clp? Does it work just as well as the other lubricants mentioned above? Any advice would be great, thanks!

CLP is what I've always used, never had any issues. I do want to move to Froglube, as it's non toxic.

Only thing I wouldn't use the CLP on is wood scales. Everything else metal or plastic is fine.

Works fine, it's not the best lubricant in the world but it certainly won't make your knives stop working.

CLP is what I use as well since it's what I have on hand. I use it on all my firearms too. It's fine for your blade.

Break Free CLP has worked better for me than Tuff glide, Marine tuff cloth , and Frog Lube. I live in Alabama and the humidity here causes a lot of knives to rust, I wouldn't worry as much bout s30v I've never had any issues with it , So I just use Nano oil in the pivot area, However, I carried my zdp-189 endura last night and was pretty mad when I got to work and puled it out and found those little orange spots around the spydie hole:eek:

I remember buying Breakfree CLP ages ago ( I didnt remember what it was, then 2 years later found the receipt LOL) I used it on my Spyderco ambitious and it made it more gritty than it was without lube. Dont like it.

IMO Nano oil is where its at

Its impossible for the Breakfree itself to make a pivot more gritty, but it might dislodge some debris that makes the pivot more gritty. So the problem is really the debris, right?

Powernoodle's CLP tip of the day: drop a nut (a bolt nut, not an almond) or a ball bearing in your Breakfree container. It aids in stirring up the teflon particles on the bottom of the container when you shake it. I don't know if this actually does any good, but it can't hurt.

I use that stuff on all my guns and knives and it works great. I think someone here on the boards did a test of all the lubricants for rust and corrosion resistance and i think break free cpl was #2

I've used CLP as more of a cleaner than a lubricant if it's on a knife I don't want to take apart. It works well at dislodging dirt and lint, etc. Be careful using it around plastic and wood though. It can and has eaten away at some plastic handles of mine in the past.

Benchmade's Blue Lube is what I use for a lubricant and it has worked well for me. If I do take a knife apart however, I use Goo Gone (essentially the equivalent of BM Blue cleaner at a fraction of the price) and that works amazingly at cleaning. That's always what I use to clean my blades a majority of the time from tape gunk and what not.

I too have been using Breakfree CLP for both cleaning and rust prevention on my carbon steel blades. Such an excellent product that is also cheap and readily available. I usually get mine from Walmart. I also like to use Tri-Flow.

One thing to consider: do you cut food with these knives?

I've had good results using clp as a cleaner, but I wipe it off and use food-grade mineral oil as a final protectant and lubricant these days.

I also use Break Free on my knives both for lubrication and for rust protection. Works well for both jobs.

I use to use gun oil on my knives, but I switched to Frog Lube as it's non-toxic and food safe.

Mineral oil attracts too much dust in my opinion, but it works well. A thin layer of lip balm is another option.

Just wanted to bring this topic back up to ask if anyone knows if Break-Free CLP will disolve the phosphor bronze washers? I know Ballistol does.....or at least it eats at them pretty good.

Try EWL by Slip2000!!!! That is the worlds best lube in my opinion. I am a master pistolsmith by trade and I have used just about every single lube at one point or another. I highly regard CLP by Breakfree its wonderful stuff but seriously try EWL it will blow your minds! !

Look at the post above yours. I brought this thread back after almost a year to see if CLP is good for knives. I'm betting you didn't know that it is almost a year old.

What? I've never heard of that. Are you sure?

Yep. Ballistol is made to clean and lube guns. It will remove the brass and copper fouling. I emailed the company to ask if I should avoid using it on PB knife washers and they said "yes, it may dissolve them over time".

This is why I wondered about BF CLP.

They appear to have entirely different compositions. Hopefully a Chem guy can come along and shed some light on which components could dissolve phosphor bronze.
