Had this old broad axe in family for over 50 years. Would like to know who made it. It rings like a bell when thumped with a finger.
Thanks,
Jack

I can't make out the script. Could be a J & B or something like that. See what you can do about getting a clearer picture. While your at it wire brush (wire wheel in a drill) or scouring pad the stamp to see if it can be made more distinct or legible.

I will try and get it cleaned up a little more. It is a J B 9 stamped in the head as far as I can tell.
Thanks
Jack

To clean it up just use a wire wheel or cup brush in an angle grinder, use it with care to remove the rust as to not destroy it's history.

Looks like a good old broad axe that you're lucky to have.

I'd like to have a better look at the steel on the bit. Also images of the top and bottom of the eye. You might have an old wrought iron axe with a laminated steel bit. It could be pre-1900.

The JB (or whatever it says) appears to be separate from the '9'. If you weigh the head and it's in around 6 lb then that stamp (inverted) is probably the head weight. Hand forged implements might have been weighed and weight stamped after completion whereas a maker stamp might have been put on earlier on.
