Here’s a rough one that I recently got. I donated it but based on the condition it would work for the OP with no worries about dirt or hard use.

I use a hori hori when digging is on the agenda, and I prefer a fixed blade for outdoor tasks when feasible.

But if a folder is required and might suffer abuse I opt for a Buck 110 LT. It’s big, sturdy, and cheap.

I am going to suggest a 10 or 12" machete. Digging and hacking at roots will be a job well filled by this tool. If you cannot find one so short, buy a long one and cut it down.

If you must have a folder, I would suggest maybe one of Rough Ryders Hawkbill folders. Inexpensive, more than adequate performance for tasks listed and readily available.

I’ve got a new garden on the way and thinking about the same thing. Either going to use an Opinel or Case sodbuster. Cheap and easy. If you lose it, no big deal.

My friend said he needed a folder strong enough to cut through a five gallon PET dispenser bottle. I suggested a Buck 110. He said it was too pricey at $40. And this guy drives a Lexus and a Lincoln.
