California Bush Bash/Neck Knife Challenge

Yeah, me too Ray. It was cool to have a knifemaker in there. I need all the feedback I can get!

KFU ...... looks to me that you are a knifemaker. I've been noticing some of your stuff and you are doing a great job!

Just kind of starting out Brian. I still have a loooooooong way to go!

I recognize all of them except the third from left on top Echo7. Im not sure whos that is

Yep that's mine.
Aldo's 1/8" thick 1095, the whole this is built around low profile, cause that's how I like my neck knives. Things have been crazy at work, so I had just put up one quick pic and sent it in.

All of the knives great, and I can't wait to see the results.

OK, I got the individual pictures uploaded. I don't know if it is appropriate at this point to tell you my favorite, we'll see when the other judges weigh in. At that point, I may weigh in with my favorites in each category, as well as my overall favorite. You should know that no single knife dominated each area of testing. Some did well in some areas and suffered in others. The testing consisted of wood carving (general whittling, fuzz stick, notching), rope cutting (1" hemp), kitchen (tomatoes and potatoes), sheath fit & finish, knife fit & finish, ergonomics, and the knife/sheath system (retention, carry, and ease of access). To illustrate the differences, there were knives that excelled with the tomato cutting, but did poorly with the potato cutting, and vice-versa, and a couple that did both well. Some that did poorly with the food did well with the wood carving, and vice-versa. Only a few did well with both. For the wood carving, there was some variability - I used dry ponderosa pine, another judge used dry california black oak, one judge used dry incense cedar, and one judge used green incense cedar. Each wood behaved differently.

Now for the pics: First, KFU

And last, but not least, Chris (I didn't catch his maker name, all I could go by was the first name on the return address)

I will say again that there were some significant surprises in this group. Looking at the blade geometry, thickness, edge thickness, etc, I had some preconceived notions about which ones would excel in which areas of testing. And some did follow what I expected. But others went completely against what I thought should happen.

Erm... aren't neck knives illegal in CA? Due to the conceal carrying of a FB?

Concealed carry of a fixed blade in CA is illegal. What do you think is the difference between a neck knife and a belt knife? Any fixed blade carried concealed is illegal no matter if it's a neck knife or belt knife. If it's not concealed, then it's not concealed.

Edited with a cooler head as Ray's reply answered the question for what it was. Relevant thread content left in place.;)

I love California ... I've never had the problems that people dream up.

I hope this thread doesn't get thrashed.

Please take that stuff elsewhere.

Here are some of my photos. I didn't take many with my camera because the battery died. The rest are on my phone and I don't know how to get those posted on here...

We had a really great time. I think this was the biggest group we've gotten so far. I think there were about 15 of us which is a good size. We had about 7 people and one dog who have never been there. It was great to meet you all and I hope to see you at the next one in the Spring.

Right on Brian:thumbup: There are a few things I don't agree with and I've had a problem or two with authority but I would never bash California.
