Carpenter steel - CTS-XHP

Sal, I was wondering what you and Eric decided was the optimum hardness for this relatively new steel for the medium/hard use folders you are using it on?

Also, Does Eric have a favorite steel for his manix 2 yet or is he still in the process of maturing the design?

Thanks. Joe

Hey Guy's, where can I Pre-Order one of these Bad Boy's ?? I've looked all over but no Luck !! Site's that were taking Pre's are now saying they've stopped !! Don't tell me there's none left ?? Or have the People looking to make a Profit taken them all ???? Thank's in advance.

I placed my pre-order a couple months ago but you could try Tom Berry at www.spydercovt.com just in case he still has some in his quota.

Given the way several sprint runs have gone lately, especially the smurf blue Manix 2, I'd be surprised if there are any dealers out there who are willing to do pre-sales who have any left for pre-sale orders. The way to get one of these at this point is probably to watch like a hawk and place an order immediately when they come into stock online.

It's no mystery that the Manix is all gone. In fact, the pre orders have all been filled over two weeks ago. Tom Berry has none for anyone, the Manix XHP is GONE

Ty for the Good New's !!! Sal, is the Carpenter Steel going to be in your regular Line Up at some point in time ?? Thank you Sir !! :D

Which steel is this and what is the composition? I tried to Google Carpenter steel, and got the company, but little more.

Sounds good any of these in the SFO for sale, I might swing by and swoop one up if so!!!!

Hi Joe,

I spoked with Eric yesterday about hardness, should be 61/62, but I'll check on Monday.

Eric's favorite steels? In my opinion, CPM-S90V and H1. Officially, "all good, just different".

If our sprints are too small, let us know and we'll increase the number for future runs.

Hi Mario,

We'll be using more Carpenter steels for our US production. We've tested a number of their steels and we were favorably impressed. Carpenter has great medicine when it comes to making steels.

That doesn't mean we're changing anything with Crucible. Just adding more flavors.

Sal, what kind of name will be put on the blade itself?

IE. S30V being CPMS S30V and such. Maybe CTS-XHP?

Increased number for sprints would be nice, maybe 10-20% increase? Thanks for taking the time to give some details Sal. It's appreciated.

Can life in Spyderland get any better? I submit that it CANNOT!

Till the next year and they improve on everything again! One just cannot keep up! :D:) Keep up the great work Mr. Glesser and everyone at Spyderco!

Thank you for the response Sal.

It's great to hear you will be trying some of the carpenter line of knife steels. There are some ones there that look to have a lot of potential. Even the new versions of the old faithfuls. I'm always looking forward to these new steel trials.

Eric has done an excellent job with these knives in every way. I look to more of his work in the future. It would be nice to see runs a little larger as it honestly getting tough to source them for some people. There will be some going hungry with this latest run.

If you don't have an established relationship with a Spyderco dealer you just might be out of luck.

I know too large of a run can have it's problems as well. Like anything else a balance has to be found. To be honest, I don't think it was during the last couple of M2 sprints.

Some love this kind of business model, and the exclusivity or profits it can bring but I'm not one of them. I'd rather give the profits to the knifemaker personally, rather than a guy who hogged several knives just to make some money. Let him become a real dealer if he wants to trade in knives so he's not selling what amount to secondhand knives for a higher price than Spyderco itself.

I have more than enough problems in my life than to add one more in either trying to find a dealer that has one still available, or, spending more on the secondary market.

Despite their excellent performance I choose not to buy, collect or use Busse family knives for this very reason. No offense meant to those that do.

Thanks for listening Sal. Regards, Joe/Raleigh

Excellent post, Mastiff. I too fall into the category of the guy who loves sprint runs but hates to pay secondary market prices for them. For instance, if I don't score an XHP Manix 2 from one of the dealers who didn't take pre-orders, I probably won't get one. Remember, even POTUS said we need to tighten up the belt.

I have never boughten a sprint knife before. what is the price approximately? I doubt it will be priced like a mule :(

Do you know what the sprint run will be on these?

On a hot number like this, hopefully it will be plenty! (Like 1,200...)

Ya I really want one of these and I heard that they are only making like 600 of em, which means I probly wont be able to get one. Kinda annoying, I'm on this forum all the time and as soon asw I hear about it, all the preorders are already gone. Oh well.
