We are the top of the foodchain. And we got here way before man made firearms. Man made it to the top with simple tools like stone spears and stone knives. so i find it hard to believe that we can no longer defend ourselves with the same technology. I know a gun is a good option but the op asked for other options. Why does everyone on a knife forum think that the knife is useless for self defense. Be it a man or a beast? After reading the post. it sounds as if everyone here thinks cougars attack so fast and kill so quickly you would never be able to draw your knife and defend. I do not live around any so if this is the case how will a gun help? hell how has anyone survied this awesome creature. I do not think you should live in fear. I also do not think you should avoid the outdoors or other things in life because you have no firearm. I am not saying do nothing I am just saying use what you can and what you feel comfortable with. Besides unless you train alot that gun could easly be taken from you and used on you

One on one out in the wild in their territory we are food to them.

It's only due to technology and numbers that we have lasted as long as we have, being able to change our environment has also helped.

But don't fool yourself we aren't at the top of any food chain.

Cougars in high country can be a serious problem; particular in the summer …. Just today, went for a motorcycle ride over Independence pass, and down to Aspen, cougars everywhere, all shapes and sizes; I'm not sure if Jerry Busse himself would have been safe out there…..fortunately had an older friend with me, his loud laughs and awkward jokes managed to keep those fat cats at a safe distance…..

There are a lot of virions out there that would agree with you, Jim. ;)

Strange thing..... I'm watching my local news right now, and they are saying that a mountain lion was actually spotted prowling around the playground at an Iowa City elementary school this morning!

It was spotted minutes before school started, so they kept all the kids inside all day. Creepy enough to have one in town like that, let alone stalking the local playground.

Well man has been eating away at their natural habitat for a very long time now.

Kids are smaller and easier to take and carry away than a full grown human.

A knife for self-defense against a large carnivore is a loser's game. Even if you win they will be carrying you out in several bags. That lion is equiped with greater speed, better senses, much greater power, twenty knives (claws) and lethal jaws. If you allow it to get close enough to stab with a knife it is already over. At a minimum you would want a spear and a pack of well trained dogs.

From http://www.cougarinfo.org/attacks3.htm

"As the cat clawed and bit into his neck, face, and head, Parker managed to open his knife's three-inch blade, stab the cougar a few times, and eventually slit its throat, leaving the cat to bleed in the middle of the gravel road."

Old style folding knife too... saved his life.
