Chopsticks:old oriental way of eating or viable survival skill?

just silly

So? When has that ever stoped us? :)

You do realize that four sharpened chopstix held together make a fork? They still don't make a spoon though.

Im asian (partly anyway) and can "just" use them. Much easier to make in the bush, there was a contest at one of our school fairs and there was competition where you had to move 20 marbles into another bowl and drink a bowl of soup (chunky of course) with chopsticks.

I use chopsticks every time I order Asian food in the woods.

I am pretty good at using them, but if I had to make utensils I would go with a spoon or fork.

Snow Peak Titanium Spork for me!

made these this past summer with the Mistress in the pic

Well, it isn't exactly a survival skill, but speaking of "Dooky-Squirts", chopstick skills come have come in quite handy when trying to determine what species produced a particular scat.
I've used many a field-made pair of chopsticks (two straight-enough twigs) to pick up all manners of nasty little critters to safely show the kids.

I'm no fan of centipedes in particular, so I'm using quick chopsticks to pick them up without injuring them.

I've also used 'em to pick up and chuck dead mice before the dog got them.

Been using chopsticks (hashi) since my trips to Japan in the 70's. Hashi are easy to make and even easier to use with a tiny bit of practice. Hell of a lot easier to make than a fork.

My dad spend a lot of time in the orient and I was raised using the stix. They are all I use for oriental food and any of the pan fried foods the wife makes up. I've also carried them in my PU and gear bag for years.

D. The way things are headed in 'Mereky, we'll all be eatin' wit' chopin sticks 'for long!:D

I reckon yur prolly right bro.

Joel,

It's certainly not a core skill, but there are a lot of life skills that can be survival skills, don't you think?

I prefer eating with chopsticks, and if I am eating soup, I just drink it. The food does not have to be diced, or "chopstick prepared", some foods are just bitten in half, or even helped into the mouth, such as long noodles. Fried eggs are another example. It might be a little crude looking to Americans, but it is acceptable. At least in the chinease culture.

I was raised using chopsticks for just about everything just like what Bumppo posted above. My mother made me practice by using change and picking them up while they were laying flat on the table.

Just picked up some SS chopsticks yesterday. Good excercise for hand/mind coordination for older farts like me. Now to master an analog synthesyzer, got to keep the gray matter flexable.

Can anyone recommend some tactical chopsticks? I hear the Cold Steel is coming out with some Carbon V chopsticks, painted black. And someone said that a training DVD is coming out that shows you traditional defensive things with them, and how they can be used to cut rope.

They're only $130 a pair. Is that a good buy? They come with a Kydex sheath.

Spent some time teachin' in Taiwan back in the late 90s so I became proficient in the art of eatin' with sticks, what a lot of Americans don't realize is that Asians typically eat outta bowls which makes usin' chopsticks a lot easier.

Any ever gets the chance to go there make sure ya catch the Dragon Boat Races.

I find them to be cumbersome and a PITA , but that's me.

IMO they are not superior in any way to a fork and spoon , or spork.

For a hike or general camping , nothing beats a Ti spork.

Yeah are you really kidding?:D Chopsticks are not only cheap, but abundant. Making them is an option, but buying them in bulk is another. You can stab as many people as you want with 20-30 pairs of bamboo ones and not hurt your pocket like that!
