Cleaning blade and scabbard

Hi - I'm a newbie to the group. What suggestions do the group have for gently cleaning a treasured military dagger? It has a brass scabboard/hilt, celluloid handle and an etched naval motif on the blade. Realise that chemicals can be the worst thing here!
